Food is needed for living. All living things need food and water to “survive”. Without food you can live for three or four weeks and without water for two or three days. But the hunger and the thirst you feel make you try to find food or water. When your stomach is empty, it sends messages to you to eat. Your body needs the substances in food for repairing itself and keeping it healthy. When the supplies of these substances decrease, you begin to feel tired and you get sick easily. These substances are called nutrients. Nutrition is the study of how the body takes the nutrients from food and uses them. There are six types of nutrients: proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals and water.
