Task Description
Position:International Programmes Volunteer –Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E).
Purpose:To provide support to the monitoring and evaluation work of YCI.
Responsible to:Monitoring and Evaluation Officer
Main responsibilities and tasks
The International Programmes Volunteer –M&Ewill be required to undertake a variety of tasks and responsibilities including:
Support to project management 40%
- Supporting Programmes Team in reviewing funding applications and progress reports received from YMCA partners for submission to trust and/or institutional donors.
- Support editing of progress reports, baseline surveys and evaluation reports.
- Support logistics of overseas visits and training workshops, including direct communication with partners
- Help summarise evaluation documents and synthesise key findings.
- Assist in updating the M&E resources for the department.
Research25%
- Conducting comprehensive desk based research around the development of M&E tools for thematic programme areas such as livelihoods, violence reduction and advocacy.
- Research best practice and developments within the field of Monitoring and Evaluation to ensure Y Care International remains a leading youth focused agency.
Data Management and Analysis 25%
- Assist in the development of a centralised database including coordination with external consultants.
- Helping international partners and Y Care International’s staff embed the new data management systems.
- Data analysis and entry into the data management system.
Communications 10%
- Assisting in writing and/or revising content on YCI’s international projectsfor YCI’s website.
- Editing of case studies (and occasionally videos) fromYCI’s international projects.
Other tasks and responsibilities will be assigned by the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer according to need.
The Programmes Research Volunteerswill gain:
- An understanding of the work of an International NGO working with partners overseasincluding an understanding of M&E within the project cycle.
- The chance to improve research and writing skillsand knowledge of specific areas of YCI’s work.

Salary and hours
To ensure that YCI and the prospective post-holder derive the maximum benefit from the voluntary placement, we ask for a minimum commitment of 2 days per week for at least 3 months. A salary is not available for this post but Greater London travel (up to Zone 6) and lunch expenses will be reimbursed. Working hours are 7 hours per day, with core hours between 10am and 4pm, and one hour for lunch.
Other relationships
Other than the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, the post-holder will work closely with the International Programmes Department and there may also be opportunities to interact with Global Youth Work, Fundraising and Communications Departments.
Person Specification
Essential Requirements
- Educated to degree level or equivalent in International Development or related field.
- Excellent writing skillsand fluency in written and spoken English.
- Strong analytical skills and experience in conducting desk-based research (including familiarity with relevant information sources).
- Knowledge of and interest in international developmentissues, especially in relation to young people in Asia & Middle East, Africa and Latin America.
- Ability to use initiative and work independently.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to relate to people from a broad range of backgrounds, cultures and influence.
- Good word processing skills and experience of Microsoft Office programmes.
- Committed to the aims of Y Care International and the YMCA movement.
- Ability to work to tight deadlines and prioritise tasks.
Desirable Requirements
- Experience of qualitative and quantitative analysis.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Access.
- Language skills (particularly Spanish and/or French).
- Research skills using a range of platforms.
- Experience of working in the voluntary sector.
