2015 ACES Nomination Guidelines AND NOMINATION FORM
These guidelines are intended to provide information regarding nomination of an individual to the Academy of Community Engagement Scholarship (ACES). Please use these guidelines when considering potential nominees and when completing the nomination form at the end of these guidelines. The Academy of Community Engagement Scholarship was formed in 2012 by a group of leaders from universities and professional associations in the United States and Canada. Invited to participate by officials from North Carolina State University, and led by Patricia Sobrero, these individuals formed a working think tank that explored the purposes and value of forming an Academy. Its mission is to serve the public good by recognizing and contributing to high quality scholarship that—in active collaboration with participating community partners—has a positive impact on complex societal needs and issues. Definition of Community Engagement Scholarship. Community engagement scholarship is the collaborative generation, refinement, conservation, and exchange of mutually beneficial and societally relevant knowledge that is communicated to and validated by peers in academe and the community.
Criteria for identification of nominees for election to membership. Members shall be engaged individuals from the community and academia who collaboratively address public issues of mutual benefit to all. Membership in ACES recognizes documented contributions in community engagement work and a desire to meet the responsibilities of membership. Aspects of community engagement work include: 1) excellent past contributions to the practice and/or theory of community engagement scholarship, 2) excellent past successes in collaborative work that resulted in significant improvements to society; and 3) the capacity and willingness of the nominee to join actively within ACES to understand and resolve major issues in contemporary society.
Nomination of an individual to ACES honors past achievement and empowers future advocacy for engagement.
Term of Membership.Following election, membership shall be for life provided that all conditions of membership are met.
Active Members have the following rights and responsibilities:
- to vote on ACES matters;
- to serve as a Director, Officer, or Chair of a standing committee;
- to serve on all committees;
- to nominate candidates for membership;
- to attend the annual meeting and regular and special meetings of the membership; and
- to receive normal communications regarding ACES matters.
Nomination. Any ACES member, founder, or board member in good standing may nominate an individual. Nominations may also be made by major supporting organizations, which shall be identified annually by the Board of Directors.
- Individuals shall be nominated in accordance with processes and procedures as prescribed by the Board of Directors.
- Individuals may not self-nominate.
- Nominators and referees are requested to maintain confidentiality with regard to those being nominated for membership in ACES.
- Nominees shall agree to a) the nomination, b) the roles and responsibilities of a member, c) attend the induction ceremony when possible should s/he be elected to ACES.
Nomination Timeline. Nominations shall be received once annually.

•Review of Nominations –July 21 to August 19, 2015
•Board Considers Recommendations –August 20th
•Letter of Invitation – August 27, 2015
•Annual ACES Awards at Engagement Scholarship Consortium September 29, 2015
Notification of the Member Elect. Each member-elect, immediately following election, shall be notified thereof in writing by the Chair of the Nominations Committee and/or appropriate ACES Board member with a copy to the nominator. Each person elected to membership must accept the invitation, in writing, within sixty days of the date of election. The results of the vote will be announced during the Annual ACES Meeting.
Each nominee not elected to ACES shall receive a letter congratulating her/him on the nomination and thanking him/her for contributions to community engagement scholarship.

NARRATIVE
I. In 400 words, summarize the nominee’s scholarly contributions to the practice and/or theory of community engagement scholarship (the collaboration between community and higher education that results in the generation, refinement, conservation, and exchange of mutually beneficial and societally relevant knowledge and creative activity that is communicated to and validated by peers in academe and the community). [40 points]
1.Describe the contributions the nominee has made to practice and/or theory of community engagement and the scholarship of the work.
2.Explain how our knowledge and understanding of community-based partnership and work is different as a result of this nominee’s efforts?
II.In 400 words summarize the nominee’s contribution tocollaborative work in generating significant impacts for society. [40 points]
1.Describe the societal issues that have been the nominee’s focus. Include the specific action(s) addressing those issues attributed to the nominee.
2.Describe the significant improvements for society that have resulted from the nominee’s work and the impact of the improvements.
III. In 100 words verify the capacity and willingness of the nominee to participate actively within ACES to offer leadership to understand and resolve major issues in contemporary societies. [20 points]
- Based upon your knowledge of the nominee, provide examples of how the nominee could contribute to ACES (e.g. knowledge of societal issues, leadership, organization, planning, analysis, organizational development and management, etc.)
- Please provide verification that the nominee understands the purpose of ACES, the rights and responsibilities of an ACES member, and is willing to serve as an active member by signing in the appropriate location on the nomination form.
SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL
Please provide a resume or CV or summary (no more than 5 pages, double spaced, 12 point font, 1” margins) for your nominee that includes key accomplishmentsrelevant to this nomination AND up to 5 pages of supplemental material.
These materials might include endorsements and/or evidence of the nominee’s commitment to engagement via letters of support from community and academic colleagues that describe the quality of the engaged scholarship, quality of the collaboration, reciprocity, mutual benefit, and/or roles of community and academic partners.Supplemental documents might also describe the impact of the partnership, using such things as summaries of external evaluations, news releases, scholarly products including community articles and presentations, links to video stories, etc.
