THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD
Fr. Young’s cat, Martin, on his own initiative, has assumed responsibility for writing a column in the bulletin each week for an indeterminate period of time.
Did you ever go to Birdland? That is apparently what they call the Stadium where Fr. Young’s baseball team, the Orioles, play their baseball games. I wish I could go to ‘Birdland’ (ha ha). Seriously though, I was watching one of those games with Fr. Young in the garage last nite and wanted to share something about it with you. There was this player who guards the second white thingy on the baseball field, and he is called Jonathan Schoop (pronounced ‘Scope’). He is very young for humans at only 21 years of age (that is pretty darn old to me.) This is the first time he has ever played the game of baseball in Birdland. Now, one thing he has to do as a baseball player is whack that ball when they throw it in there, and as is often the case with new guys, he isn’t whacking it very good. Some have begun to say that he needs to leave Birdland and learn more about whacking before he can come back. How did Schoop cope? Did he mope? Nope. He never gave up hope. Because… down two runs in the final inning, and with two outs, Schoop whacks one way, way, way out there! You could see it bouncing around in the seats! He trotted around the white thingy's and was greeted by his exuberant teammates in the dugout area. Schoop had set the charge and ignited a great comeback victory for the Orioles baseball team in Birdland. What struck me about this occurrence is how much of life is learning to deal with failure and refusing to give in to discouragement. We can’t let the ever present critics and naysayers get us down. We can’t listen to the voice of doubt within. If after prayer, and seeking wise counsel, we become convinced God's will for us is to endeavor in this way or that, then we keep firm but gentle pressure on whatever it is, and eventually, we may very well whack it out of the park. God bless you all! Martin
