SENATE RESEARCH COMMITTEE
CONFERENCE TRAVEL INTERNAL NSERC FUNDS
GUIDELINES & PROCEDURES
1
The Senate Research Committee recommends to the President financial support for research projects, conference travel, and other activities which enhance the research reputation of LakeheadUniversity and its faculty members. In general, the Committee considers requests from NSERCeligible faculty on the basis of merit, need, and the availability of funds. Applicants should be aware that the Senate Research Committee operates under Senate approved guidelines. All funding for internal research competitions is limited and designated for specific uses. Due to the volume of applications received for most funding opportunities, the Senate Research Committee does not provide applicants with comments or justification for its decisions. All decisions are made internally through a peer review process and all decisions are final.
ALL FUNDS ARE AWARDED ON A COMPETITIVE BASIS
Preference for funding is given to fulltime, NSERCeligible faculty members of LakeheadUniversity, although in special circumstances parttime faculty, postdoctoral or research fellows may be considered.
Preference will be given to applications from new faculty members. As well, requests from faculty on behalf of graduate students will be considered.
Faculty members on sabbatical leave may be considered for funding support for conference costs to 85% of the costs to a maximum of $500 per fiscal year.
Because of limited available funds, faculty is expected to develop their research to the point where applications can be made externally to NSERC.
Funds are for the support of research activities in the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council which are covered under NSERC's mandate.
Available funds will be distributed by category and competition dates according to allocations made early in the granting year by the Senate Research Committee, These allocations will be publicized. In those instances, where all allocated funds for a given competition date are not used, these funds will be forwarded within the same category to the next competition.
CONFERENCE TRAVEL(Internal NSERC Form "D")

3.Available funds for conference costs for a given NSERC fiscal year (April 1 - March 31) will be distributed among the two periods. Unsuccessful applicants are not eligible to resubmit their request for the same conference to a subsequent Senate Research Committee meeting. All applicants are eligible to submit more than one request for different conferences up to a maximum of $600.
4.Conference costs that are eligible include registration fees, per diem meal and accommodation expenses, and transportation. Per Diem meal and accommodation expenses are limited to four days and will follow the Lakehead University Travel Expense Policy. 5.Applicants must apply prior to the time of the conference unless the meeting is announced after the deadline. If confirmation of notice of acceptance of the paper is not received by the deadline, the applicant must still submit an application. Payment of an award will, however, be conditional upon receipt of appropriate documentation by the Secretary of the Senate Research Committee.
6.The Senate Research Committee will consider requests to attend a conference for the purpose of presenting a paper, conducting a workshop, a poster session or an equivalent event. In instances where there is joint authorship only one person will be considered for support by the Senate Research Committee.
NOTE:Discussants, Chairpersons and conference/workshop attendees do not qualify for conference funding support from the Senate Research Committee.
