American Lands was founded in 1992 to protect and restore America’s forest ecosystems by providing national leadership, coordination, and capacity building for the forest conservation movement.
We provide national leadership on forest policy issues by combining grassroots experience with a deep understanding of Washington politics. American Lands Alliance, based in Washington D. C., represents citizens who work to protect wild places and wildlife in our national forests. Everyday we talk with forest activists from around the country and they keep us close to what’s happening on the ground. In turn, we keep them in touch with developments in Washington D. C. We are committed to ensuring the grassroots’ voices are heard in Congress.
American Lands was founded at the height of the AncientForest wars in the Pacific Northwest and has been at the center of the battle to save our national forests since 1991. The organization, known originally as the Western Ancient Forest Campaign, was created and continues to be governed by grassroots forest protection advocates who recognize that national policies impact local forests and that they have little chance of improving those national policies acting in isolation.
