Snoqualmie Valley Community Scholarships

This sheet lists all local scholarships that choose their own winners.

DIRECTIONS

1)PLEASE READ each scholarship description carefully to determine eligibility.

2)For EACH scholarship you are applying for,you will needONE COMPLETE COPY*of your application packet with a cover sheet.

3)Your packet will contain the following in this order:

a.)Cover Sheet – list the name of the scholarship/organization, as well as your name.

b.)A completed application

c.)An unofficial copy of your transcript – you may request this in the Counseling Office

d.)Two Letters of Recommendation

*If you are applying for five scholarships, you will need five separate copies of yourapplication packet with specific cover sheets attached.

4)Your packet should be stapledin the correct order, with the cover sheet on top, and should NOT be put into folders.

5)Completed application packets are due to Carol Nelson in the Counseling Center NO LATER than Friday, March28that 3:00 p.m. (FIRM deadline).

Please Note: Post-secondary institutions include trade school, technical and community colleges, and four-year colleges/universities.

DR. KELLY GARWOOD SCHOLARSHIP ~ $200

Eligibility Requirements: A Mount Si High School graduate who is planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institution. Applicants must have a minimum 3.5 GPA and will be judged upon the following criteria: academic achievement, school involvement, community service and career goals.

DR. KIRBY M. NELSON SCHOLARSHIP ~ $500

Eligibility Requirements: A Mount Si High School graduatewho is planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institution. Applicants will be judged upon the following criteria: academic achievement, education and career goals, and demonstration of leadership and community service. This scholarship is open to current or former patients of Dr. Kirby Nelson.

LCPL ERIC L. WARD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ~ $1,500

A $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to a Mount Si High School senior that demonstrates a passion for what they love in the classroom, in life or at work; an individual that has expressed that passion in their daily life inside and outside the classroom and has shown the ability to put aside any personal challenges to make it happen; someone who plans to take their passion to the next level with a secondary education. We would like to award the individual that will follow their dream and make a difference. All students that accomplish the graduation requirements are eligible.

Eligibility Requirements: Must be a senior planning to attend a post secondary accredited institution. Applicant will have established achievement in school or community-related activities and services. Scholarships will be applied towards school tuition and fees only and must be used the following school year. Payment will be made directly to the educational institution upon the award recipient’s submission of their Student ID#, remittance address and amount. This scholarship requires 3 letters of recommendation; two from teachers or counselors within MSHS and one from someone who is neither a relative of the applicant nor a staff member at MSHS. Applicant is encouraged to select someone closely familiar with their community or charity work.

MASONIC LODGE GAINES VOCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP ~ $500

Eligibility Requirements: A Mount Si Graduate planning to attend a (2) year community college, technical college or private trade school.

PAUL HOFF SCHOLARSHIP ~ $300

Eligibility Requirements: Paul Hoff was a teacher at Mount Si High School for almost thirty years. He taught U. S. History,Auto Shop, and Senior World Problems. Mr. Hoff furthered his education to become Mount Si’s first full time librarian. He was totally devoted to students and shared with them his knowledge and his love for learning. To qualify for this scholarship you must be a Mount Si High School graduate with definite vocational or career plans, acceptable grades, a strong interest in the liberal arts (social studies), and be attending a four-year college or university.

PHIL MANGANO MEDIA TECHNOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP ~ $100

Eligibility Requirements: Applicant must show a strong passion for the various fields of media technology, including Digital Imaging, Video, Animation, etc. Applicant must also show commitment to his/her education as well as demonstrate active involvement in the school and community. Applicant must also be planning to further his/her education in Media at a 4-year or community college. PLEASE NOTE: One of the two required letters of recommendation must be from a MSHS media/tech instructor.

PUBLIC SCHOOL EMPLOYEES OF WASHINGTON SCHOLARSHIPS (TBD)

Eligibility Requirements: Applicant must be a child of a classified Snoqualmie Valley Public School Employee, and a member of the PSE Union. This scholarship is being offered to each graduating senior who is planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institute. Financial need is not a consideration. Scholarship distribution will be paid after successful completion of one quarter/semester of school.

SNOQUALMIE VALLEY COMMUNITY NETWORK – CONNECTING A CARING COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP ~ $500

In a recent survey, students in the Snoqualmie Valley responded to the question: What do you think are the three best things that help youth grow up happy and healthy? The top answer from youth:friends. The SVCN would like to learn how your friendships have helped others grow up happy and healthy.*Submit a personal story (written, video, audio, song, or pictorial story) describing how and why your friendship made an important difference to someone. Criteria for scholarship selection will be as follows: 50% on your friendship story, 25% contribution to community, and 25% on all remaining application criteria.

SNOQUALMIE FIRE FIGHTERS ASSOCIATION ~ $500

Eligibility Requirements: Scholarship will be awarded to applicants planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institution, pursuing a degree in public service; i.e. Fire Science, Healthcare or Law Enforcement.

SNOQUALMIE VALLEY KIWANIS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP ~ (4*) $1,500 ea

Eligibility Requirements: Scholarship will be awarded for career advancement to a graduate of Mount Si High School meeting the following qualifications: definite plans for future school at a post-secondary institution, financial need, a sincere career purpose, acceptable grades, and participation in school and community activities. *At least one of the four scholarships will be awarded to a Key Club member.

SNOQUALMIE VALLEY LIONS SCHOLARSHIP ~(1) $1,500 (1) $750

Eligibility Requirements: Candidates must be graduates of Mount Si High School, must be enrolled in an accredited post-secondary institution for the $1500 scholarships and a vocational or community college for the $750 scholarship in the year it is awarded. Applicants will be judged upon the following criteria: academic achievement, education and career goals, demonstration of leadership, community service, employment, and financial need.

SNOQUALMIE VALLEY LITTLE LEAGUE SCHOLARSHIP ~ (2) $500 ea

Eligibility Requirements: Candidates must have played baseball or softball in the SVLL and be qualified to graduate. Applicants must be pursuing higher education at an accredited post-secondary institution. Vocational-Technical College, two-year, or four-year colleges are acceptable. Candidates need to write a 200-word essay sharing their experience in Little League as well as ways they have demonstrated leadership by contributing to their community. Applicants may be requested to introduce themselves to the SVLL Board of Directors at a meeting in the North Bend Depot. Parents are welcome to attend.

SNOQUALMIE VALLEY ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP ~ $2,500

Eligibility Requirements: Any high school senior in the Snoqualmie Valley who plans to attend an accredited 4-year college/university or 2-year community college. Candidates are weighed on a number of criteria including financial need, academic achievement, social skills, and community service. The Rotary specifically is looking for students with strong community service experience.

SNOQUALMIE VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT EDUCATION ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP (TBD)

Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be a child of a Snoqualmie Education Association Employee (certificated teacher). This scholarship is being offered to Mount Si High School graduating seniors who are planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institution. Financial need is not a consideration. Must provide the name of parent and the school at which they work.

SNOQUALMIE VALLEY WOMEN IN BUSINESS ~ $500

Eligibility Requirements: SVWIB is looking for females with experience and commitment to their community, their school and to leadership. Applicants must be pursuing higher education at an accredited post-secondary institution with a focus on a career in the business field. Candidates need to write a 300 word essay on some aspect of their community, school or leadership experience that they feel will have the biggest impact on their future career plans.

SNOQUALMIE VALLEY YOUNG PROFESSIONALS ~ $500

On behalf of the Snoqualmie Valley Young Professionals, in coordination with the Snoqualmie Valley Chamber of Commerce, we would like to award a $500 scholarship to one Mt. Si High School outstanding student who will be attending a technical college or trade school in the fall of 2014.

The purpose of this scholarship is to enable a student to acquire the education and skills necessary to support a career in a trade industry. Applicant must have a grade point average of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale, show strong leadership in school and community and be planning to attend a trade or technical school.

Applicant must also have at least one letter of recommendation from a class instructor who teaches a vocation, technical or trade-related class OR from a professional in a trade industry that can articulate why this student is worthy of consideration.

WILDCAT GIRLS FASTPITCH BOOSTER SCHOLARSHIP ~ $250

Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be a Mount Si High School graduating senior girl who has participated in a minimum of three years in the MSHS fastpitch program, has acceptable grades and is planning to attend any post-secondary institution the year following graduation.

WILDCAT BASEBALL BOOSTERS SCHOLARSHIP ~ (2) $500 ea

Eligibility Requirements: Applicant must be Mount Si High School senior who has participated in Wildcat Baseball. Applicant must also be planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institute the year following graduation. The Wildcat Booster Association for the purpose of recognizing outstanding achievements in both athletics and academics is sponsoring this scholarship on an annual basis.

WILDCAT FOOTBALL BOOSTERS SCHOLARSHIP – (4)$500 ea

Eligibility Requirements: Applicant must be a Mount Si High School senior who has been affiliated with Wildcat Football as a participant or in a supporting role. Applicant must also be planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institute the year following graduation. The Wildcat Football Booster Club, for the purpose of recognizing outstanding achievements in both athletics and academics, is sponsoring this scholarship on an annual basis.

WILDCAT BOYS SOCCER BOOSTER SCHOLARSHIP ~ $500

Eligibility Requirements: The Mount Si Boys Soccer Booster Club will recognize a graduating senior for outstanding achievement in these areas: 1) Commitment to soccer 2) Commitment to academics 3) Commitment to the community. Applicant must be a current player on the HS soccer team and planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institution the year following graduation.

Applicants must complete and attach a separate essay of 250 words or less clearly stating their outstanding achievements in these areas.

WILDCAT GIRLS SOCCER BOOSTER SCHOLARSHIP ~ $500

Eligibility Requirements: The Mount Si Girls Soccer Booster Club will recognize a graduating senior for outstanding achievement in these areas: 1) Commitment to soccer 2) Commitment to academics 3) Commitment to the community. Applicants must be planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institution the year following graduation.

Applicants must complete and attach a separate essay of 250 words or less clearly stating their outstanding achievements in these areas.

JAMES MCKIERNAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (2) $1,000 ea (one male, one female)

Eligibility Requirements: Any high school senior in the Snoqualmie Valley who plans to attend Central Washington University. Candidates are weighed on a number of criteria including financial need,

academic achievement, social skills, and community service.

In addition, the student(s) must have participated and finished, one season of any sport while at

Mount Si High School. A letter of recommendation from the coach must accompany the application.

James McKiernan was a 2005 graduate of Mount Si High School, following his parents who were also

graduates of Mount Si. He was heavily involved in Mount Si Football. He was an inspiration to many

of his classmates, not always being the biggest or fastest, but his perseverance and determination

paid off.

He graduated from Central Washington University in 2010 and went to work for Connell Grain

Growers as a seed broker. He was killed in an accident in Pasco in December 2011. This scholarship is in

his memory to highlight the importance Mount Si High School teachers and coaches played in his

success.

SNOQUALMIE VALLEY YOUTH SOCCER ASSOCIATON ~ VARIOUS AMTS

Number/Amount of Scholarships: SnVYSA has $1,200.00 earmarked to be used for scholarships. SnVYSA reserves the right to give not less than one or more than four equal scholarships to graduating seniors from Cedarcrest HS and/or Mt Si HS. The decision of the number of scholarships to give will be made each year after review of the required student essay by the SnVYSA BOD. The essay will be judged on its content as well as grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Requirements for each applicant applying for a scholarship from SnVYSA:

(1)Grade Point Average not less than 3.0

(2)Soccer playing experience of at least one year with SnVYSA and at least one full season playing soccer for Cedarcrest HS or Mount Si HS

(3)Essay of no more than 250 words answering the following “How Playing Soccer has Affected My Life”. (speak to playing experience as well as coaching and/or referee experience, if any.)

(4)Applicants need to mail the following to SnVYSA postmarked no later thanApril 30, 2014:

(a)their essay

(b)a copy of the cover/student information page of their application packet showing GPA, SAT, ACT scores and class rank. This information has been missing in the past on some applications making the application incomplete and therefore not considered for the award.

(c)a copy of their transcript showing classes taken and grades
