First Announcement

Deadline for Applications: May 1, 2001

Summer Undergraduate Internships in Bioinformatics

This summer, the IGERT-UCLA Bioinformatics Training Program will sponsor

undergraduate internships for students entering as a Junior or Senior in

Fall 2001. UCLA graduate trainees entering in 2001 who are committed to the

IGERT-UCLA graduate bioinformatics program are also eligible. The stipend

in this NSF-sponsored program is $1250/month ($3750 maximum). The training

to be conducted during the term of these internships will be supervised by

IGERT-UCLA faculty (see http://www.bioinformatics.ucla.edu).

As per prerequisites, candidates must be US citizens, US noncitizen

nationals or permanent residents. They should have background in biology

(genomics/proteomics), computer science and mathematics (especially

probability) and be directed towards PhD training in biology, computer

science or math with a strong leaning towards bioinformatics. Students who

may require additional training in computer applications may be able to

register for formal training in the summer session of the UCLA Program in

Computing (PIC). Descriptions of summer courses in PIC are available in

the UCLA Summer School schedule on the web under "Computing, Program in" at

www.ucla.edu and include PIC 10A (Intro Programming), 10B (Intermediate

Programming), and 20A (Java). Summer courses applicable to bioinformatics

are also available in mathematics (linear algebra, Math 115A) and in the

biological sciences. Students admitted as interns will receive counseling

on prerequisites for bioinformatics training.

Application:

1) Letter of introduction, providing a brief (250 word maximum) statement of

personal interest and vision;

2) Applicant's most recent transcript or comprehensive course/grade report

(including description of course work in progress); and,

3) Two letters of recommendation from faculty or industry scientists with

whom an applicant worked.

Some research experience is a plus for admission to the program.

Information on UCLA bioinfomatics can be accessed by on the web at
