BYRDS REPRESENTATIVEThe Regional Committee of Scotland is seeking to recruit a volunteer BYRDS Representative to assist and promote development of this area within the region. BYRDS age group is from 8 to 25 years.
The British Dressage Terms of Reference for this role are detailed below:
BYRDS Representative. The BYRDS representative provides technical input to the Regional Development Officer (RDO) and to the Regional Committee on BYRDS issues. This relates primarily to implement the policy on all Regional BYRDS activities. Any queries or questions they have on this policy should be directed to the BYRDS Committee, either through the RDO, Chief Executive or through the relevant representative on the BYRDS Committee. It is for the RDO and the BYRDS Representative working together to implement this policy. In doing so it is critical that market forces are taken into account and also the activities of other regions. It is important that on-going evaluation takes place of BYRDS activities to enable the demands of BYRDS in the region to be taken in to account when implementing policy. BYRDS Representatives are recommended by the Regional Committee, approved by the BYRDS Committee and ratified by the Board.
It will be necessary, if not already done, that you attend a Child Awareness Workshop and have a disclosure check done through the CRBS.

Closing date for receipt of application forms is 13th December 2008. The Regional Committee will then review these which may result in immediate selection or informal meetings with short listed candidates.
IMPORTANT RULE CHANGES which came in to force on 1st December 2008
Qualification. 2 wins, 1 of which must be a qualifier. In Scotland, the qualification will continue to pass down to 2nd place if 1st has already qualified.
Freestyle Qualifiers – The percentages required for qualification to the Winter Music Regionals have increased –
Novice Restricted – top 2 non qualified combinations with 65% or above. Novice Open – Top 2 non qualified combinations with 66% or above. Elementary Restricted – Top 2 non qualified combinations with 64% or above
Elementary Open – Top 2 non qualified combinations with 66% or above. Advanced Medium – Top 3 non qualified combinations with 63% or above. Prix St. George – Top 3 non qualified combinations with 63% or above.
Fall of horse or rider. A fall of horse or rider in a test will result in compulsory retirement from that class. Riders may compete in any following classes, or another horse later in the same class, should the rider declare that they are fit to continue.
Waistcoats. If the decision is taken to allow riders to compete without jackets, riders are permitted to wear a plain, conservative coloured waistcoat.

Only the tests listed above may be used as qualifiers. However, they may also be run as non qualifiers.
Prize Money. Prize money will be mandatory from 1st July 2009.
The amount given for 1st prize must exceed the entry fee and if entry fees are discounted for groups such as club members, must exceed the highest entry fee charged. Prize money should be given to 3rd place, in relation to the minimum scale, but are not mandatory beyond 3rd even if class entries exceed 12. Prize money may continue to be given per class based on over all percentages, rather than per section. Vouchers/prizes in kind can only be given if in addition to prize money.

BYRDS/Fledglings. A separate newsletter is being sent to all BYRDS/fledglings. To ensure that you receive BYRDS/Fledgling details please let the RDO have your email address as all newsletters and information will be sent electronically. You do not have to be a member of BD to take part in BYRDS/fledgling activities so please encourage your friends to come along. Squad levels are aimed at – Fledgling for 11 years and under, then progression to C (prelim level), B (novice level) and A (elementary and above). Proficiency badges are also awarded and testing for the proficiency badges is usually done at camp but for 2009 will be done as a continuous assessment as well as during camps. RIDER TRAINING. A separate newsletter will be sent out to all riders at the beginning of 2009. The Rider Trainer newsletter will include details of all training and criteria for team selection. It is important that if you are interested in training and team selection that you must let me the RDO have a current email address for you as all communication will be by email. If you do not have email and still wish to receive the information you must let the RDO have a supply of 6 stamped addressed envelopes.

Team selectors will be Mary McFarlane and Les Smith in conjunction with the Regional Training coaches.
SENIOR HOME INTERNATIONAL. Two teams made the journey to The Hand Equestrian Centre in Somerset for the first ever Senior Home International with Chef d’equipe Mary McFarlane. The teams consisted of Judy Douglas Miller/Lys De La Vallee, Catherine Eardley/Weltpower and NH Prima Donna, Cath Logan/Westpoint Fulbright. Anne Plummer/Ridinghill Rose, Angela McKinna/Fergal and Jennifer Coffey/Tristan Turn. Catherine and Weltpower riding in the Advanced Medium tests got a 3rd and 7th. Angela and Jennifer both got awards in the Prelim tests, getting 8th and 6th respectively.
The 2009 Home International is being hosted by Scotland at Rowallan, Ayrshire on 17th/18th October 2009. Details of the selection process for teams will be sent to all senior riders in due course. The selection process for teams is as set down by British Dressage for all regions in the UK.
If you feel that you can help in any way with the Home International, as a writer or a steward please get in touch with Cecilia. A sub-committee has been set up to run the Home International. The running of an event such as this is very expensive and if you can help in any way with sponsorship, or know of anyone who can, please let Cecilia know.
SCOTTISH CHAMPIONSHIPS. Championship rules will be posted on both web pages. The rules for 2009 are –
· Qualifiers for the Scottish Championships will run from 1st December 2008 to 31st July 2009. The Championships will take place at Ingliston Equestrian Centre, Bishopton, Renfrewshire on 5th and 6th September 2009.
· 1st and 2nd in each Scottish Championship qualifying class will qualify. Qualifying percentages for 2009 -
Restricted section at Prelim with 65% or above
Open and Restricted section at Novice with 65% or above
Open and Restricted section at Elementary with 63% or above
Open and Restricted section at Medium with 60% or above
Open and Restricted section at Advanced Medium with 60% or above
PSG with 60% or above
All Scottish championship classes for 2009 will be run as Open and Restricted with the exception of Prelim and PSG. In accordance with BD rules, rosettes will be given for each section but prize money where awarded will be given to the highest placed rider over the 2 sections. Trophies will be awarded to the highest percentage over the 2 sections in each class. No score sheets or qualifying letters have to be sent with entry forms.
· A qualifying letter will be given to all qualifiers on the day. It is up to the competitor to ensure that they receive their qualifying letter from the organiser. To register your intent to compete at the Scottish Championships you must return the tear off section of the qualifying letter to Cecilia Gladwyn, Regional Development Officer within 14 Days of the date of the competition. Failure to record your qualification could mean that you will be unable to take part in the Championships.
· As per British Dressage rules only group 7 and 8 riders competing on unregistered horses or horses with less than 49 points are eligible for preliminary classes. Unregistered horses will have to be registered prior to the Scottish Championships.
· As per Championship rules all entries will be drawn for starting times.
SCOTTISH & NORTHERN EQUESTRIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. The Scottish & Northern Equestrian Championships will again run affiliated and Riding Club qualifiers. The rules for the affiliated section of the Championships will be identical to the Scottish Championship rules with the exception of the qualifying period which will be 1st February to 31st August. There are no trophies or prize money at the Scottish & Northern Equestrian Championship classes. Rules for the Riding Club section will be sent to all Riding Clubs in Scotland and is only open to NON BD members and unregistered horses. The Championship will be at SNEC, West Lothian on 24th/25th October.
ROWALLAN SCOTTISH MASTERS. A copy of the rules for the Rowallan Scottish Masters with Hickstead qualifiers will be available on the BD and Scottish Dressage web page. If you require a copy of the rules to be sent to you please send a SAE to Cecilia Gladwyn.
SCOTTISH SPORTS SCIENCE SEMINAR. The 2009 Scottish Sports Science Seminar will be held in the Arran Room, Oatridge College, West Lothian on 31st January and guest speakers will include Ann Tezer from Kingston Maurward College (coaching the warm up) and Liz Briscoe (horse anatomy and biomechanics). This is a class room based seminar and is open to all riders, coaches and judges. Delegates from other equestrian disciplines are invited to attend. The cost of the seminar for the day will be £40 and this will include lunch. Day will commence at 10.00 a.m. and finish at 4,30 p.m. Send SAE for tickets to Cecilia Gladwyn with cheque made payable to British Dressage. This day is being run as part of the UKCC coaching seminars and a certificate of attendance will be given to all those who attend.
BD SPORTS SCIENCE SEMINAR. The BD Sports Science Seminar will be held at Hartpury College on Tuesday 20th January. Contact Ruth Tyler at BD office for further details.
WINDSOR CASTLE FEI EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS 24TH TO 30TH AUGUST 2009THE POSSIBILITY OF A TRIP TO WINDSOR CASTLE FOR THE FEI EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS IS BEING LOOKED AT. AT PRESENT FLIGHTS ARE AVERAGING ABOUT £120 FROM ABERDEEN, EDINBURGH OR GLASGOW AIRPORT. TICKETS FOR ALL THE MAIN EVENTS VARY IN PRICE. BUT WOULD AVERAGE ABOUT £100. ACCOMMODATION AGAIN IS DEPENDENT ON HOTEL AVAILABILITY BUT THERE ARE TRAVELODGES IN THE VICINITY SO SHOULD NOT BE TOO EXPENSIVE. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN A TRIP TO WINDSOR YOU HAVE TO LET CECILIA GLADWYN KNOW BY 12TH DECEMBER AT THE VERY LATEST. IF A TRIP IS ORGANISED YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO PAY FOR FLIGHTS, HOTEL AND TICKETS PRIOR TO BOOKING.
