LARVICIDES and ADULTICIDES
MODULE INFORMATION
PURPOSE OF THE MODULE:
- To determine public knowledge of larvicide/adulticide programs
- To determine level of public support/opposition to larviciding/adulticiding
- To determine public perception of risk of WNV vs. risk of pesticides used to prevent WNV
DATE OF LAST REVISION: December 2005
MODULE QUESTIONS
VARIABLE NAME: larv_1
QUESTION:
Now I am going to ask you some questions about the use of pesticides to control mosquitoes and the spread of West Nile Virus to people.
Pesticides can be used to kill mosquitoes before they mature into adults. These types of pesticides are placed in areas such as storm sewers, ponds, and other standing water where mosquitoes breed. Last summer* was this type of pesticide used by the <fill region Health Department> *?
Response Options
1yes (includes: “I think so”, “I guess so,” etc)
5no (includes: “no, not that I am aware of”)
8don’t know (includes: “I do not think so,” etc)
9refused
*Jan-April "Last summer"
May-August "So far this summer"
September-December "This summer"
ANALYSIS ISSUES:
- Respondents asked this module must also be asked wnv8a and wnv10
- Respondents who have not heard of West Nile Virus (wnv8a=5,8,9 or pest3=0) are not asked any questions within the module
- prior to wave 61 seasonal introduction was worded “Has this type of pesticide been used by the Halton Region Health Department this summer”
- In Wave 54 “Halton Region Health Department” was changed to “fill region health department”.
- seasonal component was introduced in wave 38
- Skip patterns for larvicide questions assume that larvicides have been used within the Health Department region (larv_1=1). If larvicides were not used, skip patterns may need to be altered

- Seasonal component (last summer, so far this summer, this summer) was added in wave 38 and then removed in wave 61
- Prior to wave 61 exp_larv was worded “Actually this pesticide was used by the Halton Region Health Department” this summer. Pesticides were put in storm sewers, ponds, and other standing water.”
- In Wave 54 “Halton Region Health Department” was changed to “fill region health department”.
