An opportunity has arisen for aChildren’s Bereavement Coordinatorto join the multi-disciplinary team at Strathcarron Hospice. The successful candidate will be required to co-ordinate the day to day management of the children’s bereavement service, assessing and allocating places on “Seasons” groups and arranging staffing and volunteer support to run each group. The post holder will have regular involvement in the Season programme throughout the year and will be required to supervise, provide support and training to all staff and volunteers in the delivery of this service.

This is a permanent post working on an annualised contract averaging 12 hours per week over a course of a year. Hours will be worked flexibly and according to the needs of the service.The children’s bereavement support service is provided predominately during school term time (early evenings)and the ‘Seasons’ groups run over a 7 week period regularly throughout the year.

The ability to work to deadlines and possession of strong interpersonal skills are essential.

Hours of work:Part-time, annualised contract, averaging 12 hours per week + delivery of Seasons sessions
2. JOB PURPOSE
To co-ordinate the day to day management of the children’s bereavement service, assessing and allocating places on “Seasons” groups and arranging staffing and volunteer support to run each group.
To provide support to all staff and volunteers in the delivery of this service.

4. MAIN TASKS
Main Bereavement Service responsibilities are:
  • To provide the day to day management of the Children’s Bereavement Service including triaging referrals and allocating children to Seasons groups and arranging all aspects of the organisation of Seasons Groups.
  • Provide support to the Adult Bereavement Service in the absence of the Bereavement Coordinator (Adults) or as required by the Patient & Family Support Manager
  • To manage and provide leadership and support to staff and volunteers within this service. To act as the immediate point of contact and supervisor of those staff and volunteers.
  • To provide direct support to Seasons sessions, also delegating this to other sessional staff to ensure that no one is required to cover 3 groups in the same week
  • To ensure all sessions and client contacts are recorded on Crosscare.

5. OTHER JOB ACTIVITIES
  • Ensuring that all staff and volunteers involved in delivery of Seasons work are appropriately trained.
  • Allocating paid sessions to other bank staff as required, ensuring they are
adequately trained and supervised.
  • Refer complex or inappropriate referrals to other agencies

6. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
  • A degree or diploma in Counselling.
  • Registration with an appropriate professional body e.g. BACP, UKCP, SSSC.
  • Relevant post-registration experience of working with patients and families affected by life-limiting illness.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of current evidence of responding to grief and loss in children and young people.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of a range of counselling and therapeutic techniques.
  • Demonstrable experience of being able to work autonomously and as part of a strategic multidisciplinary team.
  • Awareness of Child & Adult Protection issues & procedures.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with PFST colleagues & volunteers.

8. SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Equipment
  • Required to use a range of office equipment, computer, telephone, fax machine, photocopier, and occasional use of car.
  • Required to use the following IT systems and software packages including: Microsoft Office, Crosscare, intranet and internet.
Working Conditions
  • Some exposure to hazards, having to deal with individuals who may be under the influence of alcohol, drugs or some other substance, where there is a risk of physical or verbal aggression.
  • Occasional requirement for lone-working.
Physical Effort
  • Requirement to drive between the Hospice and other service locations across Scotland.
Mental Effort
  • Frequent requirement for high levels of concentration.
  • Need to assimilate information effectively.
Emotional Effort
  • Exposure to distressing or emotional situations when providing support to a bereaved family or supporting others to do so.
  • Frequent exposure to emotional situations when providing support to other Hospice staff that have experienced distress or emotional upset due to a patient or family.
  • Occasional exposure to verbal abuse or aggressive and threatening behaviour.

Terms and Conditions:The terms and conditions of service are those laid down in line with the Whitley Council terms and conditions.

Location: Strathcarron Hospice.

Salary Scale:Band 6, £26,565 - £35,577 per annum, pro-rata.

Staff taking up a new appointment with Strathcarron Hospice will normally enter the scale at the minimum of the pay band/range. Any appointment above the lowest point of the pay band/range will be subject to verification of previous NHS/Hospice services or experience outside the NHS/Hospice, which is given in recognition of relevant complete years of experience.

Hours:Part time 12 hours per week (annualised) + 3.5 hours per session for delivery of each Season Groups (Season Groups run for 7 weeks)

Employees may be required to vary the pattern of their working week subject to the exigencies of the service.

Duration:Permanent

Annual Leave:27 days rising to 29 days after 5 years’ service and to 33 days after 10 years’ service plus 8 public holidays (pro rata).

Or

202.5 hours rising to 217.5 hours after 5 years’ service and to 247.5 hours after 10 years’ service plus 60 hours public holiday (pro-rata)

Pension:This post is superannuable under The Falkirk Council Local Government Superannuation Scheme and your remuneration will be subject to deduction unless you choose to opt out of the scheme.
