Offertory Prayer

Every First Sunday is tithing Sunday at First Baptist. Tithing is giving 10%, a dime out of every dollar, to God before we pay bills or do other things with our income. If you are ready to trust God with your budget you are

invited to bring your tithe to the tithe box as a demonstration of your faith. Malachi 3:10 says:

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse….Test me in this, says the Lord God Almighty

and see If I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so

much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it”.

Haggai 1:3-7; 2:8, 9

Leader: Then came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,

Congregation: Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your paneled houses, and this house lie waste?

Leader: Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.

Congregation: Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink;

Leader: ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.

Congregation: Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.

Leader: Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD.

Congregation: The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts.

All: The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.

Consider Your Ways

Michael Jackson’s 1989 hit, “Man in the Mirror”, contains the following lyrics:

I'm starting with the man in the mirror

I'm asking him to change his ways

And no message could have been any clearer

If you wanna make the world a better place

Take a look at yourself and then make a change.

Haggai expressed a similar sentiment to the remnant of Judah that returned to Jerusalem after 70 years in Babylonian captivity. He challenges them in Haggai 1:4 to “consider your ways”. The beginning of a new year is an opportunity for self-examination. If we want genuine, effective change, we must first be willing to take an honest assessment of ourselves.

Haggai wants his readers to understand that when things are not going as intended, one must first look inward. It is often convenient to blame external forces for failures, but many times our frustration finds its origin in us. God is so merciful that he affords us the opportunity to make adjustments and even to start again. Here are a few things to consider this New Year.

1.  Will you consistently pray for the salvation of a family member or friend?

2.  Will you commit to reading the Bible and praying daily?

3.  Will you forgive someone who offended you last year that you have not yet forgiven?

4.  Will you fulfill your commitments to your family and your church?

5.  Will you use the gifts, talents and resources God has given to be a blessing to someone else?

6.  Will you spend time taking care of you physical health by exercising and eating a proper diet?

7.  Will you be a good steward of your finances by tithing and saving money for retirement, college or unforeseen emergencies?

Make a commitment to consider your ways in 2013 and do your part to make it a Happy New Year.

Your chief servant,

Pastor Ronald B. Webb, Jr.
