Please read - general outline and information about the
Beyond Basic Skills Wildlife Rehabilitation & Care/Handling - Rabies VectorsCourse
Beyond Basic Skills Wildlife Rehabilitation & Care/Handling - Rabies Vectors Course
October 17, 2017 – Tuesday 8 am- 6 pm
For registered foster care givers, volunteers or those who provide interim handling and stabilization of wildlife. New or seasoned rehabilitators welcome!
Working with rabies vector species requires an extended and solid based knowledge of rabies. This course will also cover safely working with and handling RVS in your facility and the responsibility of both on and off-site foster care givers and volunteers who work with these species. Being aware and responsible helps tokeep our native wildlife populations healthy and also keeps you and the public safe. Rabies is a disease that should be respected, not feared, and knowing how to do your part to decrease the risks for everyone is a cornerstone of the work we all need to do to help eradicate the current rabies outbreak in Ontario and ensure it doesn’t recur once we are declared raccoon rabies free again.
The second half covers information and best practices on rehabilitating most of the common species that come into rehab care. Natural history, habits, diets and husbandry along with common illnesses and injuries will be covered. Please bring any questions you may have with you. There is no exam for this course, it is an interactive lecture format.
This course will address:
~ Safe care and handling of rabies vector species (RVS) in wildlife rehabilitation facilities and for anyone working hands on with these species.
~ Public health and safety, the rabies virus—separating fact from fiction, keeping risks to a minimum, reporting requirements, and making informed decisions.
~ Natural history, habitats, and food sources for the most common species admitted to rehabilitation facilities, critical for best practices used in rehabilitation will be addressed through resource materials distributed to each student.
~ Injury, common diseases ~ Diets and formula—for all ages. ~ Housing and handling—for all ages ~ Enrichment in rehabilitation ~ The importance of keeping the ‘wild’ in wildlife—determining release readiness ~
Note: no exam in this course. This is an interactive lecture course, no cadavers are used. Course manuals are distributed at the class.
