B. “I saw a thing on top…I saw a thing bulge on the mountain.”
C. “I’m not talking about the fear. I’m talking about the beast”
D. “If it rains like when we dropped in we’ll need shelters all right. And then another thing. We need shelters because of the—“
E. “Then as though they had but one terrified mind between them they scrambled away over the rocks and fled.”
The Fire
A. “The fire is the most important thing on the island…Don’t you understand? Can’t you see we ought to—ought to die before we let the fire go out?”
B. “We used his specs, said Simon, smearing a black cheek with his forearm. He helped that way.”
C. “There’s another thing. We can help them to find us. If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on the top of the mountain. We must make a fire.”
D. “We got no fire on the mountain. But what’s wrong with a fire down here? A fire could be built on them rocks. On the sand, even. We’d make smoke just the same.”
E. “The fire was dead…The fire was out, smokeless and dead; the watchers were gone. A pile of unused fuel lay ready.”
