Course description:

The GPS math curriculum adopted by FultonCounty supports student learning and helps them to develop and maintain skills while enhancing their mathematical thinking and learning. By the end of grade seven, students will understand and use rational numbers, including signed numbers; solve linear equations in one variable; sketch and construct plane figures; demonstrate understanding of transformations; use and apply properties of similarity; examine properties of geometric shapes in space; describe and sketch solid figures, including their cross-sections; represent and describe relationships between variables in tables, graphs, and formulas; analyze the characteristics of linear relationships; and represent and analyze data using graphical displays, measures of central tendency, and measures of variation.

Grading:

Semester grades will be based on tests, quizzes, projects, and homework. Grading will be heavily weighted toward assessing the mastery of the key course objectives. These objectives will be provided to the student, in detail, at the beginning of each instructional unit. Students will be strongly encouraged to continually assess their mastery of each objective and seek additional help when required. Vehicles such as quizzes and homework, keyed to the objectives, will help them with their assessment. The final grade each semester will be weighted in the following manner:

Tests / 50%
Quizzes / 40%
Homework /Class work/ Class Projects / 10%

Required Materials:

  • WHITE1.5 or 2 inch 3-ring binder with 5-tabs divider
  • one 3-holed punched 70-sheet spiral notebooks
  • College-ruled loose-leaf paper AND Graph paper
  • No.2 mechanical/regular pencils /erasers
  • Two Expo Dry Erase Markers (classroom donation is welcomed)
  • Hand Sanitizer AND Kleenex (classroom donation is welcomed)
  • Color pencils and markers(classroom donation is welcomed)
  • Glue sticks (classroom donation is welcomed)
  • Ream of colored paper (classroom donation is welcomed)

Homework expectations:

Homework assignments will typically be due the following school day, unless specified. Answers will be provided in class when the homework is due and each student is expected to carefully check his/her homework for accuracy. Time will be allotted to ask questions about problems that were done incorrectly. Homework must be legible and written in pencil, with sufficient work shown as modeled in class. Homework completion is a key to mastery of the course objectives and should be done consistently. A short quiz containing previously assigned homework problems will be used to check for understanding and the grades will make up the homework grade.

Academic Honesty:

Cheating on tests, quizzes, projects, homework, and semester final will not be tolerated. Any cheating or even the appearance of cheating will result in a zero for both parties (the copier and the one providing answers).

Classroom Rules and Consequences:

In order to facilitate learning, I expect each student to adhere to the following rules.

  • To be prepared for class, which includes bringing his/her Spiral notebook, workbook, lined paper, graph paper, pencil (no pens!), and completed homework (no returning to lockers!).
  • To always be respectful to teacher, substitute, and classmates.
  • To be on time to class. Late students without a pass will be marked tardy.
  • Behavior – NO GUM IS ALLOWED IN Mrs. Krishna’s CLASSROOM.
  • Only water in clear bottles is allowed
  • Cell phone use during class time is prohibited

Any misbehavior in the classroom may result in the following consequences.

  1. Warning
  2. Parent e-mail/ phone call
  3. Detention
  4. Office Referral

Minor infractions will result in private detention held in my classroom. Major infractions or repeated minor infractions will result in entry into the established school discipline cycle.

Below is set forth behavior expectations and consequences for ElkinsPointeMiddle School. Students who behave in a fashion that puts themselves or other students in physical danger, behave or speak in a threatening fashion, refuse to follow a directive, or exhibit significant disrespect toward an adult will bypass the below and be referred to the office immediately.

Tardies:

1st Offense- Warning from teacher

2nd Offense- 5 tardies total = call home by ISS Teacher

3rd Offense- 10 tardies total = Public Detention and call home (assigned by ISS)

4th Offense- 15 tardies total = Office referral (assigned by ISS)

Behavior:* Note, steps 1-3 may be

1st Offense- Warning from teacher collapsed or re-ordered

2nd Offense- Parent Contact by teacher depending on infraction

3rd Offense- Detention and referral to team for discussion

4th Offense- Office Referral

Elkins Pointe has a Think Room where students are sent if their behavior interferes with classroom instruction. Here, students are counseled, parents are called, and offenses are recorded into a database. Students with dress code violations are also sent here and offenses are recorded. Students who violate dress code will call home, be required to change into a PE uniform, and be sent back to class immediately. Refusal to follow directives in Think Room will result in referral to administrator.

Think Room:

1st Visit- Parent Call Home, Change Clothes (Dress) or Remain for Period (Behavior)

2nd Offense- Parent Call Home, Change Clothes (Dress) or Remain for Period (Behavior)

3rd Offense- Parent Call Home, Change Clothes (Dress) or Remain for Period (Behavior)

4th Offense- Parent Call Home, and Office Referral

Makeup Work Due to Absence:

FCBOE policy allows for makeup work in the following manner: student is allowed one day per day of excused absence to make up any missed assignments. You are responsible for obtaining missed assignments, as well as making sure that they are turned in. At (ElkinsPointeMiddle School, the student will be given the same amount of time to make up work as the student was absent unless other arrangements are mutually agreed upon.) The student will receive the actual grade on make-up work if the absence was “excused”.

Late work:

Late work will have 10 points deducted per day up to 3 days. After that, work may be turned in within 9 weeks of due date for up to 50% max credit.

Provision for improving grade:

  1. Students who have low (73 or below) or failing cumulative grades may ask for the teacher for opportunities to improve their grade when all work required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including attendance.
  2. Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating circumstances may improve their grades.

Help sessions:

Help sessions will be available Tuesday 8:00AM or as necessary by appointment. Academic Lab is also available during advisement. Students are welcome to come for help without an appointment but I can’t guarantee that I will be available.

Teacher/parent communications:

Formal progress reports will be sent home four times each semester at approximately four and one-half week intervals. I will contact parents/guardians by email regarding items of general interest. I may contact parents regarding specific academic or behavioral performance by phone or email. Parents should contact me by email. Parents without access to email may contact me by sending a note with the student. I will call when I receive the note.

This syllabus should be read by the student and parent/guardian and kept in the student notebook for future reference. Please sign the form below to let me know that you have done so.
