Job description

S4C has over 30 years of programme material which is currently on a mixture of video tape including Betacam SP, Digital Betacam, HDCam and HDCam SR. As the older formats are becoming increasingly difficult to support, S4C are running a project to digitise this material creating a digital tape (LTO) archive.

As part of the process there will be a requirement to check the technical quality of the material being digitised. S4C are creating 3 quality control (QC) roles within the project to perform this function. The successful candidates will form part of a team including ingest personnel and will be directly responsible to the Project supervisor.

In particular, you will be responsible for, inter alia:-

  • Using automated file checking software to check a selection of the digitised material.
  • Liaise with S4C’s Content Management Unit to determine the material to be quality checked (QC).
  • Spot checking of all files to ensure there is essence, no dropouts and correct video – audio sync.
  • Monitor audio levels using audio metering.
  • Monitor Video levels using a broadcast waveform monitor.
  • Liaise with the Ingest Supervisor on any technical issues.
  • Liaise with the Content Management Unit if re ingest of material is required due to technical issues.
  • Any other reasonable duties.

Qualifications / A good standard of general education. / A technical broadcast qualification
Experience / Experience working in a broadcast environment- technical, programme archive or programme production. / Experience working in a broadcast VT area.
Experience of the quality assessment of broadcast video and audio.
Skills and knowledge / Good oral and written communication skills are essential.
A working knowledge of computer software packages e.g. Windows is required as is the ability to use existing internal IT systems effectively and efficiently; in addition the ability to adapt to new and emerging technologies is essential within the post. / The ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh.
Personal attributes / Ability to work flexibly depending on service needs.
Ability to work calmly under pressure.
Ability to work as part of a team and to work independently.
An ability to organise and prioritise workloads- the ability to work to tight deadlines.

Other details

Location:Your usual place of work for the time being will be S4C’s centre at Parc Tŷ Glas, Llanishen, Cardiff, CF14 5DU or anywhere else in Wales in which some or all of S4C’s activities are located from time to time, at S4C’s request. You will be expected to travel to wherever S4C reasonably demands, from time to time.

Salary:£23,213 - £26,884 dependent on experience.

Contract:2 years

Working hours:Your normal hours of work will be according to a shift pattern, totalling 1898 hours per annum, including weekends and bank holidays. Due to the nature of the post, flexibility will be required. S4C reserves the right to require you to undertake such reasonable overtime as the needs of S4C dictate. Any overtime shall be at the sole discretion of S4C and you shall only be entitled to payment/time off in lieu for hours worked in excess of your normal working hours if the overtime is expressly authorised in advance by your manager. Details of overtime allowances are contained in the House Agreement between S4C and BECTU, a copy of which is available upon request from S4C's Human Resources. Your meal break will be taken as agreed by S4C.

Probation period:Everyone who is appointed by S4C is expected to be on probation for a period of six months in order for the employer to review performance, conduct and attendance at work. S4C reserves the right to terminate the contract during the probation period with one week’s notice.

Holidays:In addition to statutory bank holidays, you will be entitled to 229 hours of annual leave with pay during a 12 month period, with such period running from 1st January. If you work part-time or for a period of fewer than 12 months, your holiday entitlement will be calculated on a pro rata basis to the nearest half day.

Pension:After 3 months of service, employed staff are entitled to join a Group Personal Pension Scheme which is subject to the terms of any scheme that exists and is revised from time to time. Should you join the Group Personal Pension Scheme, S4C will contribute 10% of your basic salary to the Scheme. You will be expected to contribute 5%.
