Chapter A – General Matters
1.1Applicability of Standard
This Standard applies to fixed automatic fire extinguishers (hereafter: fire extinguishers) destined for installation in an enclosed space that is not exposed to air flow in a speed exceeding 0.5 meters per second, in a temperature range of -5° Centigrade to 60° Centigrade at least.
The extinguishers to which this standard applies are destined for use exclusively for class B fires, in accordance to the Israeli Standard IS 1012.

1.3Definitions
The following definitions apply to this Standard:
1.3.1Filling pressure
The pressure level of an extinguisher that is full and ready to operate at a temperature of 20° Centigrade.
1.3.2Work pressure
The maximum pressure level of an extinguisher at a temperature of 60° Centigrade.
1.3.3Testing pressure
The pressure level at which the extinguisher container is being tested, according to Article 3.2
1.3.4Nominal size
The weight of the powder contained in the extinguisher (kg).
1.3.5Extinguishing capacity level
The extinguishing capacity of the extinguisher, expressed in the size of fire it is able to extinguish, according to Israeli Standard IS 1012.
1.3.6Release gas
A gas or a mixture of gases, that are contained in the extinguisher container together with the powder and that enable the pressured delivery of the powder from the extinguisher.
1.3.7Fixed automatic extinguisher
An extinguisher with an automatic activation or release system, permanently installed above the risk area.
Chapter 2 – General requirements
2.1Activation mode
The extinguisher shall be activated by means of a heat sensor incorporated within a sprinkler, in such a way that at a certain temperature the extinguishing powder shall be automatically released onto a given area.
2.2Extinguishing substance and release gas
2.2.1Extinguishing substance
The extinguishing substance shall be a fire extinguishing powder that complies with the Israeli Standard IS 1022 Part 1.
2.2.2Release gas
The release gas in the container shall be nitrogen or air.
The release gas shall be dried to projection level in atmospheric pressure (51°).
The release gas shall be dried with a system and in a device that were approved and monitored by an approved laboratory[1]
It is permitted to add to the release gas up to 4% gas intended for leak detection.
2.3Marking
The outer part of the extinguisher shall be painted red, except for a white line circling at least one third of the extinguisher’s front and placed a distance of approximately one quarter of the total extinguisher’s height from the top edge of the extinguisher. The width of the line shall be (±30) millimetres.
On the white line, the word “Powder” shall be printed in large and clear letters.
The following details shall be printed on the extinguisher, underneath the white line:
-Name of manufacturer, address and trademark (if applicable);
-Nominal size (kg);
-Level of extinguishing capacity according to Israeli Standard IS 1012;
-Weight of the full extinguisher (in kg, accurate to 0.10 of a kg);
-Working pressure in 60° Centigrade (bar or kg to cm);
-Filling date (month and year);
-Type of extinguishing substance, its chemical formula or commercial name, and the contents of the main substance;
-The release gas;
-The words: “Protect from overheating, sunlight and corrosive environment”;
-The words: “Suitable for extinguishing liquid and gas fires only” (accompanied by Figure 1)
-The words: “Periodical checks shall be carried out in accordance with Israeli Standards IS 129 Part 1 and IS 1928.
In addition, the following details shall be imprinted on the body of the extinguisher:
-Name of manufacturer or their registered trademark;
-Serial number and batch number;
-Test pressure (bar);
-Year of manufacture;
-Nominal size;
-A symbol indicating the extinguishing substance is a powder – P

2.4Nominal sizes
The nominal size of the extinguisher shall be one of the following series: 12 kg, 6 kg or 3 kg.
2.5Extinguisher container
The container shall comply with the Israeli Standard IS 570 Part 1 Article 2.2 – the container, with the exception of the sub Articles 2.2.2. – an extinguisher larger than 2 kg and 2.2.3 – an extinguisher with a nominal size of 1 kg and 2 kg.
2.6Container connectors
The container connectors shall comply with the requirements of the Israeli Standard IS 570 Part 1.
2.7Protection from corrosion
Protection from corrosion shall comply with the requirements of the Israeli Standard IS 570 Part 1.
2.8Insert
In the centre of one of the domes there shall be an insert that shall be used as an opening for convenient filling of the extinguishing substance. This opening shall also be used for the installation of the operating head. The operating head shall be connected directly to the insert and not by means of a tube.
-In a container of soft steel the insert shall be of soft steel or copper alloy.
-In a container of aluminium alloy, the insert shall be an integral part of the container.
-The thickness of the insert’s side shall be the same as the depth of the thread plus at least an additional 2 millimetres.

2.9Operating head
The operating head shall include a sprinkler, a pressure gauge, a gas filling opening and a device for the release of the container’s internal pressure before dismantling.
The sprinkler shall be attached directly to the operating head and not by means of a tube.
An aluminium container shall have a chrome-coated sprinkler (to prevent galvanised corrosion).
The sprinkler shall include a red sensor for a temperature of 68° Centigrade and a dispersion fan.
2.10Thread
The thread in the insert used for the installation of the operating head shall comply with the requirements of the Israeli Standard IS 570 Part 1.
If the operating head is only fitted with a sprinkler, it shall be screwed together with a thread that complies with the requirements of the Israeli Standard IS 1596 Part 1.
2.11Pressure gauge
The extinguisher shall be equipped with a pressure gauge displaying the pressure present inside the extinguisher. A one-way valve to allow testing the pressure in the container and operation of the pressure gauge can also be fitted. The pressure gauge shall comply with the requirements of the Israeli Standard IS 570 Part 2.
Instead of a pressure gauge, another pressure testing device can be installed. This device shall comply with the requirements of the American document UK 299 from 1989, Article 9.
2.12Filling weight
The actual weight of the extinguishing substance (the powder) in the container shall not exceed the nominal size by more than 5%.
2.13Filling pressure
The filling pressure of the extinguisher, measured after at least 24 hours rest at 20° Centigrade, shall not deviate by more than ±1 bar from the pressure calculated for the extinguisher at 20° Centigrade.
The filling pressure shall not exceed 11.9 bar (175 P.S.I.).
2.14Refilling and maintenance
Refilling and maintenance shall be conducted in accordance with Israeli Standard IS 129 Part 1, Articles: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.1, 8.2, 8.6, 9.6 (with the exception of 9.6.3). Refilling shall not reduce the effectiveness of the extinguisher as it is defined in this Standard and in Israeli Standard IS 1928.
2.15Extinguisher seal
The extinguisher seal shall comply with Israeli Standard IS 570 Part 1, in the Article discussing “The extinguisher seal”.
2.16Mounting kit
The extinguisher shall be equipped with a mounting kit or a device that will allow fixing of the extinguisher to a wall or ceiling. This kit or device shall be capable of supporting three times the weight of the full extinguisher. Fixing the extinguisher shall ensure its stability whilst in operation.
The extinguisher can also be equipped with a post base, in accordance with the conditions above.
In any case, it must be ensured that the extinguisher sprays downwards, and that the mounting kit or base, do not block the powder dispersion area.
2.17Installation
The extinguisher shall be installed in a location where the ambient temperature is below 60° Centigrade.
The height of the bottom of the sprinkler shall not be more than 2 meters from the protected area.
Chapter 3 – Testing methods and their requirements
3.1Manufacturer’s tests and their requirements
The manufacturer shall test every extinguisher with the tests described in the Israeli Standard (IS 570 Part 1 Article 3.1 – “Tests carried out by manufacturer and their requirements”.
The extinguisher shall comply with the requirements of the above Article (3.1.1, 3.1.2)
3.2Container resistance to hydraulic pressure
Tested in accordance with the Israeli Standard IS 570 Part 1, in Articles:
-“Container resistance to test pressure” (3.2.1)
-“Container resistance to rupture pressure” (3.2.2.)
-“Container resistance to repeated pressures” (3.2.3)
The container shall comply with the requirements of the Articles above.
3.3Preparation for testing of the level of fire extinction capability
3.3.1Acclimatisation
The extinguisher is acclimatised as described in Article 3.6
3.3.2Preparation of fire
A fire is prepared in a tank, as described in Israeli Standard IS 1012, Chapter 3 – Class B fires, by the fire name marked on the extinguisher.
3.3.3General conditions
The extinguisher shall be installed in a stable manner, with the sprinkler 1.8 to 2.2 metres above the centre of the tank.
The wind speed during testing shall be up to 0.6 meters per second.
3.4Testing of the level of fire extinction capability
The contents of the tank is ignited.
The extinguisher shall be operated no later than 30 seconds following ignition.
During fire extinction there shall be no spraying of the fuel from inside the tank.
The fire shall be extinguished completely and should not be re-ignited for any reason within 3 minutes of extinction.
Powder in a quantity exceeding 5% of the nominal size of the extinguisher shall not be left in the extinguisher.
After the test, the following data should be noted:
- Has the extinguisher extinguished the fire;
- The size of the fire extinguished;
- Time between ignition and operation of extinguisher;
- Duration of extinction;
- Speed of external wind.
3.5Minimal extinction capability
The minimal fire extinction capability of the extinguishers shall be as specified in the table below:

3.6Acclimatisation
The extinguisher is filled with extinguishing substance and release gas as stated in marking. The extinguisher is acclimatised as follows:
- Cold acclimatisation
The extinguisher is acclimatised for a week in an ambient temperature of (-5)° Centigrade;
- Hot acclimatisation
The acclimatisation shall be carried out within 24 hours of the cold acclimatisation.
The extinguisher is acclimatised for a week in an ambient temperature of 60° Centigrade;
- Post acclimatisation tests shall be carried out at least 24 hours following the hot acclimatisation.
3.7Sealing
The sealing is tested after the acclimatisation.
It is tested with accordance to the Article “Sealing” (3.8) in the Israeli Standard IS 570, Part 1.
The extinguisher shall comply with the requirements of the above Article.
3.8Resistance to vibration
The extinguisher, full and ready to operate, is mounted on a vibration table that vibrates at a frequency of (60-75) cycles per second and in a minimal amplitude of 0.25 millimetres.
After 2 hours of constant vibration, the extinguisher is placed in an oven set to 55° Centigrade for 24 hours.
The extinguisher is taken out of the oven and left to cool to the ambient temperature. Then, the following test are carried out:
- Seal testing – according to Article 3.7, without acclimatisation;
The extinguisher shall comply with the requirements of Article 3.7;
- Operation testing – the extinguisher is operated by any heat source and the remaining powder is tested.
The remaining powder shall comply with the requirements of Article 3.4.
3.9Resistance to corrosion
Tested in accordance with the Article “Resistance to corrosion” (3.10) in the Israeli Standard IS 570, Part 1.
The extinguisher shall comply with the requirements of the above Article.
3.10Strength of insert thread
Tested in accordance with the Article “Strength of insert thread” (3.12) in the Israeli Standard IS 570, Part 1.
For the purpose of testing, the temperature gauge can be removed and the opening can be sealed.
The extinguisher shall comply with the requirements of the above Article.
3.11The mechanical attributes of a tin steel container
Tested in accordance with the Article “The mechanical attributes of a tin steel container” (3.13) in the Israeli Standard IS 570, Part 1.
The extinguisher shall comply with the requirements of the above Article.
