Geometric Quilt Project

Standard: G.CO.5 Given a geometric figure and a rotation, reflection, or translation, draw transformed figure. Specify a sequence of transformations that will carry a given figure onto another.

Objectives:

1. Students will define translation, rotation, and reflection

2. Students will discuss perimeter and area formed after object is translated, rotated, or reflected.

3. Students will use different transformations to create 12x12 final project from original 6x6 object. Students will share and discuss their projects on the class blog.

Procedure:

  1. You will work in group of 2-3 students. You are free to choose your group however each member of the group has to participate in the creation of the design and posts on the blog.
  2. As a group fill out Information Sheet 1.
  3. Parameters for your first 6x6 design are
  • You can only use whole 2x2 squares and these squares cut into two parts
  • At least 1/3 of all squares cannot be whole squares
  • You have to use at least 4 different colors (check what colors I have, if you want different ones you will have to provide these colors by yourself)
  1. As a group fill out Information Sheet 2
  2. Post your first blog post with proposed 12x12 design describing what type of transformations you are going to use.
  3. Comment on the design of at least 2 other groups. Your comments have to be professional in nature and consist of more than “Good job, bro”, “This is awesome” etc. You may offer helpful suggestion and check on the correction of other group post but be kind, supportive, and helpful.

The blog will be monitored and inappropriate posts will be deleted and the student will receive F for the project and disciplinary referral.

  1. As a group create your 12x12 patch design project using newspaper as your base. Please bring newspaper for your project. Start gluing your pieces starting with the upper right corner. Be neat. Small gaps between pieces are ok, but be careful.
  2. Post the picture of your final project on the blog describing contribution of each member and description how you created the project. Also share what when well, what problems you had with the project and what would you do differently.
  3. Once again everyone needs to comment on other groups posting. Remember to be professional and kind.
  4. Fill out Informational Sheet #3. Post it to the class blog under your picture of 12x12 patch design project.
  5. Comment to at least 1 Sheet #3 post. Check their work, be professional and kind.

If you have any questions please ask Mrs. Stone. Remember the project is worth 15% of your grade and 50 pts. All info for the project will be posted on the class website.
