Aims and Objectives:

The aim of this study day is to provide occupational therapists with basic knowledge and practical skills necessary when working with clients with abnormal tone.

Following this study day, applicants will have an understanding of:

Ø  The Physiological background and causes of abnormal tone

Ø  Theory and evidence based practice re: treatment methods

Ø  Clinical assessment and measurement of tone

Ø  Pharmacological and non-pharmacological options in the treatment of abnormal tone

Ø  Clinical reasoning and decision making in relation to management of tone

Ø  Use of casting for upper and lower limb, including practical workshop

Ø  Splinting methods, design and rationale for neurological patients, including practical workshop

Ø  Consideration of positioning through 24 hour postural management

Ø  Importance of interdisciplinary treatment planning

Ø  Consideration of functional use of tone
