A study to assess the Self Concept and Adjustmental problems among the I year B Sc (N) students in selected Nursing Colleges in Mangalore.
6.BRIEF RESUME OF INTENDED WORK:
6.1 Need for the study:
Adolescents are in a crisis state wherein they have to face changes in life pertaining to all aspects, physical, emotional, social and environmental dimensions. When they are separated from their home to a new environment in the hostel, they are required to make a lot of adjustments. Moreso when an individual comes to a healthcare set up wherein they have to deal with patients and hold responsibility.
Ezeze, 1994 denotes that adapting to a new environment especially after high School to a college can be quite problematic. Hence adequate orientation and support are to be given.
Ideally adjustment problems would diminish in the first three months and certainly do not last longer than the first year.(Wilson,1984).
A study was conducted in 277 normal adolescents in the age group of 12 - 18yrs and 30 adolescents between 13 - 19yrs with anti social problems being addressed.
Therefore the investigation feeds the necessity of assessing the level of Self concept and adjustment problems in the I year B Sc Nursing students and how they adapt themselves to the new environment and come out of peer pressure.
6.2 REVIEW OF LITERATURE:
Basically Self concept is a psychological dimension that tells how good we feel about ourselves. It is a crucial factor in determining the nature of human behaviour (Hayakawa,1963) that is solidified in adolescence.(Neel, Jay, Litt, 1985). Self Concept has been shown to be a relatively stable personality trait from adolescence onwards.(Offer, Ostrov and Howard , 1981, Engel 1959, Valliant and Mc Arthur 1972)
Many socio cultural factors have important effects on individual development. Social status as it is mediated by race, ethinicity, income, religion and geographic residence shapes cultural values which in turn affects the way individuals view themselves and are viewed by others.
According to Chilman 1983 Culture evolves from the life history and experiences of a group and the group’s attempt over a period of time to adapt to its environment.
Elder 1980 also believes the developing individual is imbued with values, beliefs and expectations of his or her social reference group.
A COGNITVE DEVELOPMENTAL PERSPECTIVE ON THE ADOLECENT SELF CONCEPT:
The study of Self concept development within a cognitive developmental framework has received increased attention in the recent self concept literature.
However the effects of transition from concrete to formal operations in adolescent self concepts, the distinction between Self concept and self esteem during adolescence and the differentiation of age from cognitive - developmental as independent variables have not been systematically explored.
The present study considered these issues in an investigation of the cognitive – developmental basis of the self concept during childhood, early and late adolescence.
8 – 12 and 16yr old males and females were given the Twenty Statement Test,(TST), THE Coopersmith Self esteem Inventory and Piagetian measures of concrete and formal reasoning.
Across all age groups, no significant effects due to cognitive – developmental levels were found on the TST protocols. However the variables of age and sex were significant for the physical, concrete, introspective and abstract dimensions of self concept for adolescent subjects. Self esteem was significantly related to several dimensions of self concept. The result suggest that there are significant age related differences in self conception between early and middle adolescent years.
Varghese Iean Cherian and Lily Cherian of Sovenga (South Africa) studied the Adjustment problems in University students in 1994. A group of around 1200 Ist year students both male and female from different Faculties of Arts and Science, Management studies, Health Sciences, Law and Mathematics, Technology and religious studies participated in the research. The study showed 33 – 85% of them had Adjustment problems at various levels.
6.3 PROBLEM STATEMENT:
A study to assess the Self concept and Adjustmental problems among the Iyear Nursing students in selected Nursing colleges.
6.4 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:
The Objectives of the study are
-To identify the level of self concept among the I year B Sc Nursing students.
-to identify the level of adjustment problems among the I year BSc Nursing students.
-to find out the co relation level of self concept and level of adjustment problems among the 1st year B Sc Nursing students.
6.5 OPERATIONAL DEFINITIONS:
Self concept represents how a person sees himself or herself and is thought to have 3 components. Ideal Self (the person one would like to be), Public Self (the image one believes others have of oneself), and real self (the sum of these subjective thoughts, feelings and needs that a person sees as being authentically there.
Adjustmental problem is a mal adaptive reaction to an identifiable psycho social stressor that occurs within 3 months after the onset of the stressor. It is indicated by either impairment in social or occupational functioning or symptoms that are in excess of a normal and expected reactions to the stressor.
The other terms used for adjustmental problems are transient situational personality disorders, transient situational disturbances and mal adaptive reaction.
6.6. ASSUMPTIONS:
- It is assumed that nursing students will have change in Self concept in the first few months of the course..
-It is assumed that they will have some adjustment problems at the initial days and they may cope up with the situation in the forthcoming days.
- It is assumed that Self concept and adjustment problems are influenzed by the selected demographic variables.
6.7.DELIMITATIONS:
1.Only selected Nursing colleges are included in the study.
2.Only I year Nursing students are included.
6.8.PROJECTED OUTCOME (HYPOTHESIS):
H.1 Students of Iyear B Sc Nursing are expected to have a change
in Self concept within a few months of study.
H.2.I year B Sc Nursing students are expected to have minimal
adjustment problems within a few months of study.
H.3 There will be significant association of Self concept and
adjustment problems with selected demographic variables.
