UK/Korea 2017-18 Creative Futures
Background
UK/Korea 2017-18 Creative Futures will take place in Korea from February 2017 through to March 2018 and will showcase new and on-going collaborations between the UK and Korea in culture, arts, education, sports, social economy and trade. UK/Korea 2017-18 is being developed in partnership between the British Council, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and UKTI (UK Trade and Industry) and a wide range of Korean UK cultural and education institutions. As part of the overall programme, the British Council will manage and deliver all activity taking place in Korea under the pillars of Creativity, Education, Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Programme design is still ongoing. The British Council will coordinate and deliver communications, sponsorship and evaluation strategies for the UK/Korea 2017-18 Creative Futures programme.
This programme presents a unique opportunity to deepen and strengthen the UK’s existing relationship with South Korea and to build on strong foundations of mutual respect and appreciation. Both countries have in recent years been working closely together in a wide range of fields, and the relationship’s importance was marked by the State Visit in 2013 by President Park Geun-hye to the UK. Both countries also give high priority to the drive in to inspire innovation and creativity in business, the arts and in the social economy. The programmes we are developing for 2016 - 18 will allow large numbers of people in both countries the chance to explore what the challenges are for strong OECD economies with rich cultural traditions and international ambitions in the 21st century.
South Korea emerged as a major economic world power following the Korean War in the 1950s and is now the 13th largest economy in the world - a remarkable feat for a country of 50 million which did not prosper for much of the first half of the 20th century. It is now the home to world leading brands such as Samsung, Hyundai and LG. The Korean Wave (hallyu) has taken Korean culture through TV dramas and pop music to millions around the world, with great commercial success. It has many high ranking universities and these have built strong links across the world, including with counterparts in the UK. The UK is seen as an important partner, and both the Korean government and businesses are major investors in the UK and investment from the UK in Korea is growing. It is essential that UK/Korea 2017-18 Creative Futures demonstrates the mutual benefits flowing from close ties between the UK and South Korea
Around the world, the UK as a whole, and London in particular, are perceived as outstanding in the area of culture and creative industries.
