WATER PROJECT

Preliminary Report on:

ACTIVITY 4. SYNCHRONISE THE METHODOLOGIES FOR MONITORING IN ROMANIA AND BULGARIA AND WITH THE INTERNATIONAL REGULATIONS

Sub-Activity 4.2. Description of the common methodologies for bi-lateral activities (common measurements):

One field campaign on the Danube River was organized in 15th of October, for the river stretch between Giurgiu - Russe and Zimnicea - Svistol gauge stations. This activity was organized with the participation of PP2 and PP3 from Romania and PP11 from Bulgaria.

4.2.1 Preparatory phase:

The measurements were made with the laboratory ship Sarmizegetusa, acquired by PP2 in the project WATER DANUBE. The ship was prepared to move on route Giurgiu (493 km) - Zimnicea (554 km), the electrical systems were checked, was measured the amount of diesel fuel, were made lifeboat manoeuvres and was started the boat engine for 30 min.

On10.15.2014, the shipconducted asetof actionsaccording to the schedulebelow:
6:30-6:45, broughtthe shipinGiurgiu port;
7.00-8.00was suppliedwith drinking water;
8.00-9: 30 measurements andsamplingsin Giurgiu/Ruse section;
9.30 -13.30 traveled Giurgiu,riverkm 493 to Zimnicea, river km554;
14.00-15.30measurements andsampling in Zimnicea/Svistov section;
15.30-18.00 travel from ZimniceatoGiurgiu.

4.2.2Sampling and analysis:

The common field campaign consists in hydrological measurements such as water flow speed and direction, as well flow discharge.

The water flow data was obtained using Romanian boat and both Romanian and Bulgarian equipment, meaning the Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler acquired by PP3 in the framework of Water Danube project and the Sontek River Surveyor M9, used usually by PP11 in their field work. Two cross sections profiles were obtained for each hydrometric gauge station and the discharge values were almost the same; the difference between the values of liquid discharges, computed by Romanian and Bulgarian teams, was under 2%. One of the reasons for this difference could be the calibration of the devices, but in any case is in the statistical error range.

Example of the measurement with the Romanian device in Giurgiu-Ruse section for the Danube river:

The Danube total flow is 5694 m3/s for the Giurgiu-Ruse section.

Example of the measurement with the Romanian device inZimnicea–Svistov sector for the Danube river:

The Danube total flow is 5544 m3/s for the Zimnicea/Svistov section.

Example of the measurement with the Bulgarian device inthe Giurgiu-Ruse profile:

The Danube total flow is 5590 m3/s for the Giurgiu-Ruse section.

Example of the measurement with the Romanian device inZimnicea–Svistov sector for the Danube river:

The Danube total flow is 5472 m3/s for the Zimnicea/Svistov section.

4.2.3 Analysis of the obtained data:

The common data set will be discussed on bilateral basis.(Sofia, 18-20.02.2015?)
