Introduction
This portfolio guidance is for everyone involved in practice learning for level 2 undergraduate social work students at the University of Wolverhampton. The module aims to enable the student to develop competence across the National Occupational Standards in Social Work, to reflect on their actions, and to deepen and expand the knowledge base that supports their practice.
Formally, the module is known as SO2003 70 day practice learning and successful students achieve 45 credits.
Students will undertake practice under close supervision from a placement supervisor. Practice assessors will provide opportunities to reflect on practice and consider the underpinning knowledge. Following on from the 30-day Level One placement, students will take a more active and responsible role in the services provided by the agency.
Not all placements will be in social work settings, but all placements offer the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and values required for social work.
As at level one, students must practice in accordance with the General Social Care Council Code of Practice, and practice assessors will assess their adherence to this.
Additionally, students must demonstrate that they are developing competence across the National Occupational Standards (the NOS). This provides a bridge to the level three placement, during which the student must demonstrate full competence across the NOS.
Throughout the year, students will also be advancing their knowledge through further academic study at University. The portfolio should demonstrate both knowledge and its use in practice.
Thus, at the end of the module, the student is expected to demonstrate the following learning outcomes:
1. Adherence to the values and ethics of social work practice, particularly the GSCC Code of Practice.
2. Developing competence across the National Occupational Standards.
3. An applied understanding, derived from practice, research, academic writing and service user perspectives, of key social work theories and approaches employed within their practice learning setting.
4. An applied understanding of policy, legal and organisational contexts appropriate to their practice learning setting.
These broad learning outcomes are explained and expanded on by various indicators. The indicators are given on the mark sheets and report forms throughout the portfolio.
Some of the indicators have been developed in conjunction with service users and carers, as part of a pilot project in involving service users and carers in the assessment of practice. A group of service users and carers will second read a sample of portfolios as part of the standardisation process, and will focus on the assessment of these particular indicators.
The student will receive a grade for the module, made up of a number of components.

Portfolio Item 2c : Risk Assessment statement & Health & Safety Guidance
The placement supervisor and student should complete this form within 2 weeks of the start of the placement. One copy is to be kept for the portfolio.
GUIDANCE FOR STUDENTS:
All social work students are asked to reflect back on the work that you covered on Health & Safety in either the Preparing for Practice Module (BA students) or Principles of Safe Practice (MA Students). This will empower you to consider issues around RA and H&S in the Agency that provides your practice learning opportunity.
GUIDANCE FOR PLACEMENT SUPERVISORS:
As a minimum the Health & Safety induction should include fire and emergency procedures, first aid and accident reporting policies, lone working arrangements, infectious diseases and smoking policies.
PLACEMENT SUPERVISORS OR THEIR MANAGER IN LINE WITH GUIDANCE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF WOLVERHAMPTON FOR STUDENTS ON PLACEMENTS ARE ASKED TO ADDRESS THE FOLLOWING:
Do you have an infectious diseases policy? If so is it included in the H&S induction process?
I agree that this agency accepts responsibility for ensuring that a risk assessment policy is in place and that the student has an understanding of this.

Practice Learning Agreement guidance
In the first weeks of the practice learning opportunity (“the plo” or “the placement”) it is important that everyone involved: -
1. get to know one another
2. recognise, value and respect each other as individuals
3. consider their own roles and responsibilities and those of each other as set out in the portfolio
4. draw up supervision agreements (practice assessors with students and placement supervisors with students) which set out specific decisions about how to work with each other.
The learning agreement is a means of ensuring that everyone is fully informed of their responsibilities and enabled to fulfil them. Paying proper attention to this agreement is an important means of enabling the student to experience fair assessment.
It is the responsibility of everyone involved in the placement to complete the necessary tasks and pass the information to the student.
The student should ensure that everyone knows what information and actions are needed, and not assume that the assessor and supervisor know in detail what is required. The student should begin discussing the agreement as soon as the placement starts and not leave everything to the last moment.
