Aboutthecourse

TheMasterofHeritageStudiesaimstomeetthetrainingneedsofallthosewhowishtoworkinafieldthatintersectswithheritage,bethisingovernment, thebusinesssector,non-governmental

organisations,internationalorganisations,museums,universities,heritageagencies,nationalandprovincialparksandmore.Twoareasofspecialisationareoffered:IndigenousAustralianheritageandinternationalheritage.

DrawingonAustralia’sleadershipandexperienceindevelopingsocially

engagedandsociallyresponsibleheritagepractice,thisdegreecoversalltypesofheritageandofferstraininginworkingwith,caringforandsharingheritage.Issuesoflegislation,management,conservation,tourism,development,stewardship,presentation,sustainability,ethicsandcommodificationaresomeofthosecovered.

HeritageStudiesisanareaofparticularresearchstrengthatUWA.Youwillbetaughtbyinternationalexperts,havetheoptionofgainingheritageexperienceinChina,takepartinheritagestudytoursandundertakeprofessionalheritageworkplacements.WesternAustraliaisheritage-rich,with50,000+yearsoftangibleIndigenousheritageandvibrantintangibleheritagetraditions.

ThecourseistaughtthroughtheFacultyofArtsandtheSchoolofIndigenousStudies.TheFacultyofArtshasover3000studentsstudyingacrossabroadrangeofdisciplinesinthehumanities,culturalandsocialstudies,languagesandmusic.TheSchoolofIndigenousStudiesteachescoursesinIndigenousknowledge,historyandheritage

toIndigenousandnon-Indigenousstudents,andprovidestheculturalandacademicleadership,strongIndigenousstudentsupportandqualityIndigenousknowledge,teachingandresearch,

toenabletheUniversitytofulfilitsIndigenoushighereducationobjectives.

Coursestructure

Thiscourseconsistsofunitsuptoatotalvalueof96points.

Year1:Takethetwocompulsoryunitsplussixoptionalunits.

Year2:Writeadissertation,undertakeaprofessionalworkplacementandeither(a)doastudytouror(b)takeanadditionaltwooptionalunits.

Studentswhosuccessfullycomplete24pointsmaygraduatewithaGraduateCertificateinHeritageStudies,whilstthosewhosuccessfullycomplete48pointsmaygraduatewithaGraduateDiplomainHeritageStudies.

Studentshaveupto5yearstocompletetheMasterofHeritageStudies.

StudentswhohavecompletedamajorinIndigenousKnowledge,HistoryandHeritageorequivalent,asrecognisedbytheFaculty

andSchool,maybeeligibleforadvancedstandingforconversionunitsuptothevalueof24points.

Compulsoryunits

1.Debates in Heritage StudiesProvidingthetheoreticalunderpinningsofthedegree,thisunitconsidersthehistoryofheritagestudiesandprovidestheopportunity

toengagecriticallywithcontemporaryheritagedebates,especiallynon-Westerncritiquesofearlyheritagewritings.Itincludesdiscussionsaroundthedefinitionofheritageandhowpeoplefromabroadspectrum

ofdisciplinarybackgrounds,locallyandglobally,theoriseandworkwithheritage.

2.WorkingwithStakeholders

Learnhowtoworkandinteractwitharangeofstakeholders,especiallyIndigenouscommunities,aswellasthenatureofAboriginalknowledgeinrelationtoheritageandthebasiclevelofculturalliteracyrequiredforethicalandprofessionalheritagepractice.ExpertsinIndigenousworldviewsandculturesharetheircommunity experiences.

3.ConservationinCulturalLandscapes, Historic TownsandUrbanPrecinctsInvestigatetheprocessesofidentification,assessment,and

managementofculturalsignificance inarangeofplaces,globallyto locally,acrossthethreeinternationalareasofconservation:culturallandscapes,historictowns,andurbanconservationareas.Usingglobal

andlocalcasestudies,examinehowplaceshavebeenassessed,recordedandprotected,andthelevelsofconservationplanningthathavebeenappliedtothem.

4.ArchaeologicalResourceManagement

Archaeologyhastwomainthemes:thepresentationofarchaeologytothepublicandthepublic’sperceptionofarchaeology;andarchaeologyasheritage,includingthereasonsforprotectingarchaeologicalremains,themechanismsfordoingthiswithintheexistinglegislativeframework.Topicsincludeownershipofarchaeologicalheritage,repatriation,archaeologyandidentityandpresentingarchaeology.

5.FoundationsinHeritageManagement

Investigatetheshiftfromobject-basedtosignificance-basedheritagemanagementsystems.Review

typesofsignificanceandhowitisdetermined.Considerhowtobuildsignificance-basedheritage

managementframeworksandplans.

6.TheBusinessofSustainableHeritage

Offeringapracticaloverviewof howtorunafinanciallysustainableheritagebusiness,thisunitprobesarangeofgoodbusinesspracticesthatcanlaythegroundworkforfinancialsustainability.Explore

commonmistakesandthepracticestohelpavoidthem.Includingpayroll,financialmanagementandreporting,taxandauditing,subsidymodelsandgrantfundingoptions,thiscourseiscasestudyheavy.

7.IntangibleHeritage

Learnthetechnicalandpracticalknowledgeofwhatconstitutesintangibleculturalheritage.Explorehowtherelevantinternationalconventionsandoperationalguidelinescanbeapplied,orrequiredeveloping.Developyourabilitytoanalysecriticallyandreflectonthecorerelationshipbetweenheritageandidentity,andthemeaningandroleofheritageinoursociety.

8.Heritage and Development in AsiaAddresstherelationshipbetweenheritageanditsimpactonnationaldevelopment,throughpolicy,practiceandissuesinAsia.Examineheritageconservationcasestudiesandexplorehowpolicyandpracticeinteractwithissuessuchaspoliticalchange,economicdevelopment,urbanisation,migrationandglobalisationinspecificculturalandpoliticalcontexts.

9.History and HeritageVocationallyoriented,thisunitexploreskeyissuesfacedbyhistoriansworkingintheheritage

industrytoday.Itincludesmethodsworkshopsandoff-campustrips.Beintroducedtotheexcitement,challengesandopportunitiesofworkingasanhistorianintheheritageindustry.

10.Heritage Governance:GlobaltoLocal

Understandthebackgroundto

andconceptofheritagegovernance,aswellasthelegalmechanisms,

atvariouslevelsusedinheritageconservation.Investigatethemajorinternationaltreatiesfortheconservationofworldheritage,

underwaterculturalheritage,movableheritage,intangibleheritageandculturalexpression,aswellasthetranslationofthoselegalobligationsintolocalandnationalpractice.

11.InternationalandIndigenousSpecialTopics

Customdesignedtomeettheparticularinterestsofenrolledstudentsandtheavailabilityofguestlecturers,thesespecialunitsprovidetheopportunityforanin-depthconsiderationofaheritagesubjectnototherwisecoveredandthatisofspecialtopicalrelevance.
