Lesson 44: Dividing Decimals With Up To 2 Decimal Places
Week 6
Objective: Divides decimal with up to 2 decimal places
Value Focus: PunctualityPrerequisite Concepts and Skills:
Mastery on dividing whole numbers and dividing decimals
Materials: Number cards, flash cards, chart, calculator
References: K to 12 Grade 5 Curriculum Guide M5NS-IIf-116.1, Learners Material, Mathematics for a Better
Life pp.182-183, Growing Up with Math pp. 170-172
Instructional Procedures:
- Preliminary Activities
- Drill
Strategy: Game – “Stepping on a Ladder”
Mechanics:
- Divide the pupils into 2 groups with 3 members.
- Teacher will flash a number card.
- Pupil 1 in each group will say their answer.
- The pupil who can give the correct answer first earns the point so he/she will make one step forward.
- Game continues until the three members of the group reach the end point.
- The team who reached the end point first declared a winner.
880 ÷ 8
155 ÷ 5
324 ÷ 4
3648 ÷ 6
9645 ÷ 3
- Review
Strategy: Game –“ Number Scramble”
Materials: 2 sets of cards with digits 0 – 5
Mechanics:
- Form 2 groups. Give each group a set of cards
- Using the numbers on their cards, ask the groups to form a division equation that will satisfy the question you will dictate.
Sample questions:
- Form a division equation that gives the smallest possible quotient.
- Form a division equation that gives the greatest possible quotient.
- Form a division equation that gives a quotient multiple by 10.
- Form a division equation with a number 2 in the quotient. Etc.
- The group who can first give the correct answer gets a point.
- The first group to earn 3 points win the game
- Motivation
What projects do you do in your EPP class? Do you make these yourself? Do you submit these on time?
- Developmental Activities
- Presentation
Present this problem to the class.
Aldy bought a piece of rattan 0.36- metre long for his EPP project. He cut it into pieces of 0.12metre each. How many pieces did he make?
- Help the pupils understand the answer by asking some comprehension questions. Then ask: What is asked? What are given?
- What operation should you use to solve the problem ? Why is division the operation needed to solve it?
- Let the pupils write the number sentence on the board.
- Show this flow chart to show the sequential steps in dividing a decimal by a decimal.
0.36 x 100
0.12 x 100
36
12
3
0.36 ÷ 0.12
0.36
0.12
1 2 3 4 5
- Talk about the chart.
What did we multiply to the dividend and the divisor?
- Elicit from the pupil that once the divisor has been changed to a whole number, the equation can then be simplified just like in dividing whole numbers.
- Ask the pupils: Is your answer reasonable? How can you use multiplication to check your answer?
- You may further ask: If you were Aldy, would you also exert such effort in order to be able to submit your project on time?
- Performing the Activities
Study the problem, then answer the questions .
Jenny bought 0.75 meter of pink ribbon, which she will cut into 0.25 meter strips for her
Project in EPP. How many pieces did she make?
- What is asked?
- What are given?
- What is the operation to be used to solve the problem?
- What is the number sentence?
- What is the answer? Present your answer in a flowchart showing the sequential steps in dividing decimal by a decimal.
- Why was the decimal point moved two places to the right in both the dividend and the divisor?
- Processing the Activities
After all teams have presented their output, ask the questions : “ How did you find the
Activity? How were you able to find the answer to the problem? Discus with the pupils the
steps in dividing decimal with up to 2 decimal places.
- Reinforcing the Concept and Skill
- Discuss the presentation under “ Explore and Discover “ in LM.
- For more practice, have the pupils work on items 1-5 under “ Get Moving “
- Ask the pupils to work on the exercises under “ Keep Moving “ using calculator.
- Summarizing the Lesson
Lead the pupils to give the following generalization by asking :
How do we divide a decimal with up to two decimal places?
In dividing a decimal with a two digit decimals :- First, make both divisor and dividend a whole number by multiplying 100 or by moving decimal point two times going to the right.
- Then, divide as in dividing with a whole numbers
- Applying to New and Other Situations
Ask the learners to solve items 1-5 under “ Apply Your Skills “ in LM.
- Assessment
Find the quotient.
1). 0.24 ÷ 0.06
2). 0.56 ÷ 0.08
3). 0.88 ÷ 0.11
4). 4. 55 ÷ 0.05
Divide and check your answer using multiplication.
5). How many 0.29 piece are there in a 9.28 meter of cloth?
- Home Activity
Remediation
Answer these questions:
- How many 0.31 meter are there in 9 61 meters?
- How many 0.12 cm are there in 6.48 cm?
- How many 0.26 m are there in 5.98 m?
- How many 0.47 m are there in 6.11 m?
- How many 0.08 kg are there in 6.48 kg?
Enrichment
Try more. Find the quotient.
- 104.88 ÷ 0.38
- 243.75 ÷ 0.75
- 113.40 ÷ 0.18
- A construction supervisor worked 9.5 hours and earned Php1 472.50. How much was his hourly rate?
- A driver asked that his tank be filled with Php350.00 worth of gasoline. The attendant filled his tank with 21.20 liters of gasoline. To the nearest centavo, how much did a liter cost him?
