About the Project

The vision of the Multicultural Support Choices (MSC) project is to engage the hearts and minds of young people from CALD and refugee backgrounds and their communities in the positive value of disability support work. Community engagement will take the shape of targeted outreach, school engagement as well as community roundtables, where a range of stakeholders will discuss cultural, social and spiritual perspectives on support work as well as the vital role of men as caregivers. In addition to outreach the project offers young people an opportunity to explore disability support work further through paid training, work experience and a skills development program. Young people will be supported to develop their own skills while making a difference in someone else’s life by receiving coaching and mentoring support as well as completing a skills development portfolio to identify transferrable skills and personal growth.

Multicultural Support Options – Program Officer

Position purpose: To foster positive perceptions of disability support work among CALD communities (with a focus on young men from CALD backgrounds) in order to increase work opportunities for young people and create better outcomes for people with disability seeking culturally and age-appropriate supports.
Classification / SCHADS Level 5

Frequent travel throughout Sydney.

Project Coordination /
  • Develop action plan based on project aims and intended outcomes;
  • Adhere to project delivery timelines to ensure project is delivered within timeframe set out by the funding body;
  • Compile and submit project reports;
  • Liaise with external consultants in the creation of a skills development portfolio for project participants;
  • Consult with people with disability from CALD backgrounds to co-design training and skills development pathways for project participants;
  • Liaise with ECSC disability and children’s services to secure work experience opportunities for project participants;
  • Develop manual and resources on community engagement strategies

Community Outreach & Partnerships /
  • Identify and map community groups, leaders, services and other appropriate places of interest for engaging multicultural communities and individuals in the project;
  • Analyse data (such as Census data) regarding demographics of the project focus areas for outreach purposes;
  • Use creativity and innovative approaches to run events/forums/roundtables with young people, community leaders and other stakeholders from diverse and multicultural with the aim of exploring the positive value of disability support work;
  • Undertake community outreach and engagement activities to recruit young people from CALD backgrounds as participants for the project;
  • Liaise with relevant stakeholders, programs, services and projects to establish partnerships for project delivery and participant recruitment;

Training, Coaching & Mentoring /
  • Facilitate roundtables/workshops to engage diverse communities and young people in the value of disability work;
  • Deliver training program on disability support work;
  • Provide individual coaching and mentoring support to young program participants from CALD backgrounds

Skills, knowledge and qualification requirements / ESSENTIAL
  • Relevant tertiary qualification (Social Work, Community Services, Adult Education or equivalent)
  • Sound understanding of and commitment to the principles ofMulticulturalism, Access and Equity
  • Demonstrated ability to master program content and address the needs of the client/audience
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated facilitation/training experience preferably to young people and CALD audiences
  • Experience engaging diverse communities
  • Experience of working in the disability sector
  • Demonstrated ability to establish rapport of young people
  • Demonstrated well-developed computer skills.
  • A current driver’s licence is required.
  • A current police check & WWCC will be required.
