British Literature Senior Summer Trip
Dear students and parents,
I am thrilled to be back at Kingwood High School! This is my second year teaching English IV at KHS and I have decided to explore the possibility of planning a class trip to the United Kingdom. As you know, English IV is a survey of British literature and history, which I believe presents seniors with a unique opportunity. As seniors, taking a class trip to the United Kingdom will not only bring you into personal contact with the people and places you will have studied all year, but will also enable you to continue to grow into mature adults before entering college or the workforce. Basically, a class trip to the United Kingdom presents the ideal combination of both personal growth and academic enrichment. You will have the privilege of traveling overseas to another country, experiencing another culture, and immersing yourself in British literature and history.
Our class trip would be directed by Education First (EF) Educational Tours. EF has 45 years of experience and has been used by other teachers at KHS. The cost of the trip is more expensive than I initially understood (summer rates are the most expensive). The EF Tour Consultant that I have been in contact with has suggested that we have an official Parent Meeting and initial enrollment by September 30th. She has provided me with the following price quote:
Senior Trip: England, Wales, Ireland, and France student total: $3,288
Parents are invited to go on the trip, as well. The adult fee is slightly more expensive (add $400 to the student total).
As far as adult supervision is concerned, I plan on having ONE adult for every SIX students. My wife will be joining us even if we have less than 12 total students. Additional adult supervision will be either parents who want to join or other teachers from KHS. My goal is to get an initial group of between 6 – 12 students enrolled; and then add to the group. Obviously, if we are going to have a Parent Meeting and initial enrollment by September 30th, this process will happen quickly for those who are able to commit to the trip within the next two weeks. I have no idea if it will even be necessary, but I plan to cap the group at 30 students.
If we have an initial 6 students sign-up (the required minimum), then I will complete New EF Group Leader Training. Thus, I will have received training on how to successfully lead a group of students on an international trip prior to the trip itself. I have prior travel experience to the United Kingdom and my wife has traveled all over the world. I assume that some students and adults will also have international travel experience, as well.
Please, take some time to look over the tour itinerary. Discuss the financial cost involved and your motivations for taking such a trip.
I would like to receive feedback by Monday, September 19. I will schedule an official Student Meeting for that week (Sept. 19 – 23). The official Parent Meeting would be the next week (Sept. 25 – 29).
I think this will be a very enjoyable and memorable experience; and I hope to hear from you soon!
Thank you.
Mr. Bryan Henry
