Whittier Elementary

Report Cards

The end of grading period 5 is April 25th. So, please be checking the parent portal and making sure that your student is where you expect them to be before report cards go home. Report cards will go home on Friday April 28th. Just a reminder, that if students are failing a class as we approach the track meet or have missing work, they will not be able to participate in the elementary track meet. We expect to win at everything we do here at Whittier, but we are students first, athletes second. Thank you for your help and support in this matter.

Earth Day Event

Earth Day is this Saturday! Come celebrate in the school garden on Saturday, April 22nd from 11:00-1:00 (weather permitting). Bring a picnic lunch and a blanket and enjoy activities like face painting, planting, painting a rock garden, and making homemade bird feeders! Hope to see you in the garden!

Independence

One important job we have as a parent is to foster independence in our children. As parents, it is sometimes tough to realize that as our children get older, they need us in a different way. Just because we can do everything for them, doesn’t mean we should. In my experience, children that are given the opportunity to be more independent have a better view of themselves and are much more confident than those that are more reliant on their parents. Parents help foster independence by giving children added responsibility. This can be done at home in several ways. Parents can allow their child to choose what they wear to school. They may need some guidance by having them choose from two or three choices. Also small household chores help children feel they are contributing to their family.
