MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF OCTOBER 5, 2010

3:30 P.M., THE LOFT OF THE GUILLOT UNIVERSITY CENTER

The UNA Curriculum Committee met at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, in The Loft of the Guillot University Center. The following members were present: Dr. Jana Beaver, Dr. Sharon Campbell, Dr. Tom Coates, Dr. Melvin Davis, Dr. Kerry Gatlin, Dr. Vagn Hansen, Dr. Donna Jacobs, Mr. Ben Kimbrough, Dr. Anna Lott, Dr. Janice Myhan, Dr. Keith Sellers, Dr. John Thornell, Ms. Mandy Wicks, Dr. Laura Williams, and Dr. Sue Wilson (also holding the proxy for Dr. Patricia Roden). Dr. Tim Carter, Chairperson, presided. Attending as guests were: Chris Maynard, Craig Christy, Craig Robertson, Ron Smith, Jill Simpson, David McCullough, and Chiong-Yiao Chen.

Approval of the minutes of the meeting of September 14, 2010

Dr. Coates moved approval and Dr. Myhan seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Consideration of the request from the Council of Academic Deans for revision to section 4.4.3, Curriculum Development, of the Faculty Handbook

Dr. Coates moved approval and Dr. Campbell seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Update from Sue Wilson on Consideration of the request from the Registrar’s Office for the inactivation of SL 199 and SL 499 and replacement with 199 and 499 in all subjects

Excerpt from 6-22-10 minutes: Dr. Coates moved approval and Dr. Peterson seconded the motion with authorization to the Registrar’s Office to establish another course number for the 499 course which will not conflict with the independent study or any other course number. The motion was approved unanimously. Sue Wilson will report at the next meeting on which course number was assigned.

Dr. Wilson will make a report at the October 12 meeting.

Consideration of the request from the Department of History and Political Science for change in title and/or course description and addition of special fees for HI 201, HI 201H, HI 202, HI 202H, HI 301W, PS 301W, HI 456, HI 461, HI/PS 477, HI/RE 479

Dr. Campbell moved approval and Dr. Coates seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Course Fee Requests

Departments were asked to ensure that when course fee requests are submitted, they can provide proof, if requested, that the fee links directly to the course and not departmental costs. Because tuition costs are escalating, families are rightfully asking pertinent questions about course fees and the university needs to be good stewards with their monies. It was suggested that a request be made of the Business Office to create a new budget line for course fees in order that these expenses may be tracked.

Consideration of the request from the Department of History and Political Science for the inactivation of the following courses: HI 410, HI 439, HI 472, HI 475, PS 402, PHL 402, RE 402

Dr. Coates moved approval and Dr. Campbell seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Consideration of the request from the Department of History and Political Science for new courses and addition of special fees: HI 417, PS 315, HI 460, HI 462, HI 485, PS 316

Dr. Lott moved approval and Dr. Campbell seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Volume of Supporting Materials

Because the supporting materials for this meeting were so voluminous, it was determined by consensus that syllabi for new course requests submitted to this committee should be limited to an abbreviated one-page document. In addition, starting with the October 12 meeting, the agenda and supporting materials will be scanned and e-mailed to all committee members.

Consideration of the request from the Department of Foreign Languages for addition of the following courses as possible General Education candidate courses: FL 100, FL 101/101H, FL 201, FL 204

Dr. Lott moved approval and Mr. Kimbrough seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. This item must be submitted for approval to the Articulation and General Studies Committee before it can appear in the Undergraduate Catalog.

Consideration of the request from the Department of Foreign Languages for course number/title change: GR 400W, GR 401W, GR 402W, SP 400W, SP 401W, SP 402W

Dr. Lott moved approval and Dr. Campbell seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Consideration of the request from the Department of Foreign Languages for a new course: SP411W

Dr. Campbell moved approval and Dr. Coates seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Consideration of the request from the Department of Accounting and Business Law for new courses: AC 361P, AC 362P, AC 365P, AC 366P, AC 462P, AC 463P, AC 465P, BL 460P

Dr. Beaver moved approval and Mr. Kimbrough seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Consideration of the request from the Department of Criminal Justice for course description revision, CJ 306; Consideration of the request from the Department of Criminal Justice for course description revisions: CJ 306 and CJ 323; Consideration of the request from the Department of Sociology for course description revisions: SO 323 and SO 306

Mr. Kimbrough moved approval and Dr. Coates seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Consideration of the request from the Department of Sociology for the removal of SO 223 from the specified list of required Area V courses and move it into the list of Major Core Requirements

Dr. Coates moved approval and Dr. Campbell seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. This item must be submitted for approval to ACHE before it can appear in the Undergraduate Catalog.


Consideration of the request from the Department of English for new course: EN 491W

Dr. Lott moved approval and Dr. Coates seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Consideration of the request from the Department of History and Political Science for revision of social science major

Following extensive discussion, Mr. Kimbrough made a motion and Dr. Lott seconded the motion to table this item to the next meeting to allow the College of Arts and Sciences to deal collectively with the concerns raised. The motion was approved by a vote of 6 for and 4 against.

Consideration of the request from the Department of Music for course inactivations: MU 128-428, 138-438, 148-448, 168-468, 178-478, 188-488, 122, 134, 142, 152, 162, 172, 182

Dr. Campbell moved approval and Mr. Kimbrough seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Consideration of the request from the Department of Music for course numbering revision of MU 133 to MU 231, and course description and prerequisite changes for MU 383 and 384

Dr. Lott moved approval and Dr. Coates seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Consideration of the request from the Department of Music for new courses: MU 232, 290, 291, 233, 372, 382

Mr. Kimbrough moved approval and Dr. Myhan seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. Dr. Jacobs noted that the College of Education would like to continue to work with the Department of Music to reduce the number of hours in the music education major.

Consideration of the request from the Department of Music for change in program requirements for BA/BS degrees with a major in music

Dr. Coates moved approval and Mr. Kimbrough seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. This item must be submitted for approval to ACHE before it can appear in the Undergraduate Catalog.

Consideration of the request from the Department of Art for revision of course number, title, and/or description of AR 323 (with course fee), 347, 447, 465, 483W, 484, 486W

Dr. Lott moved approval and Mr. Kimbrough seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Consideration of the request from the Department of Art for new course, AR 487W

Dr. Lott moved approval and Mr. Kimbrough seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.


Consideration of the request from the Department of HPER for the replacement of MG 335 with MG 382W in the Sport Management concentration

Dr. Beaver moved approval and Dr. Campbell seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. This item must be submitted for approval to ACHE before it can appear in the Undergraduate Catalog.

Consideration of the request from the Department of HPER for the inactivation and replacement of HPE 404 with HPE 401 in the Exercise Science concentration

Dr. Campbell moved approval and Dr. Lott seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. This item must be submitted for approval to ACHE before it can appear in the Undergraduate Catalog.

Consideration of the request from the Department of HPER for course revision, HPE 401

Mr. Kimbrough moved approval and Dr. Williams seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Consideration of the request from the Department of HPER for new courses, some with fees: HPE 145, 146, 147, 148, 150, 151, 152, 153, 154, 155, 156, 157, 158, 159, 160, 161, 162

Mr. Kimbrough moved approval and Dr. Williams seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Upon motion by Mr. Kimbrough and second by Dr. Myhan, the meeting adjourned at 5:05 p.m.
