Procedures for Biology class

 Homework & Classwork

1.Do your own work unless instructed to work in groups.

2. HELP others… don’t GIVE. Giving may result in zeroes for all involved.

3.The understood due date of an assignment is at thebeginning of the next class meeting. I WILL TELL YOU IF THIS IS NOT THE CASE.

4.Late assignments are accepted at the following pro-rated scale:

1 day late = 70% of earned score

2 days late = 50% of earned score

5.Do NOT work on another class’s assignment in science class without permission.

6.Listen carefully to all instructions and due dates.

 Tests & Quizzes

1. Test day is a very important day.

2.Be prepared to begin the test when the bell rings. You will usually have a few minutes to study, however, some longer tests may not allow for this.

3.Bring something else to work on after the test. (a book, magazine, other work, crossword, anything that is quiet)

4.Complete any reading assignments made as homework. These assignments tend to turn into quizzes.

5.Failed quizzes may be retaken within 2 days. Arrangements must be made to retake the quiz outside of the regular class period. (OWL or in regular classroom before or after school) FAILED TESTS CANNOT BE RETAKEN.

6.Tests and quizzes are designed to determine whether you have learned thematerial presented in class or that you have read. Gaining an unfair advantage by cheating in any form will result in any or all of the following: office referral, a call to your parents, a zero on the work, exclusion from some school clubs. A zero on a testdramatically reduces your semester average.

Laboratory

1.Laboratories are to be written in the format given in the Science Reports handoutunless a teacher prepared report is handed out.

2. Labs are not free time. Failure to do the required procedures in the allotted

time will result in an incomplete or late lab and a lower score for that lab activity.

3.Follow the safety instructions given for each lab.

4.Listen carefully to all oral instructions. Read all written instructions.

5.Clean your work station and help clean any community work areas.

Absences and Make-up Work

Absences are the primary reason for student failure. Failure to make up work results in zeros. Failure to be in class when material is presented and explained results in lack of understanding and poor test scores.

The following procedures are not negotiable and will detail how to make-up missed work. Keep in mind that you are expected to be in class learning. Excused absences allow you to make up work missed, but they are still an inconvenience to you.

Upon returning to school, all work must be made up. An amount of time equal to the time missed will be allowed for make-up work to be turned in. It is the responsibility of the student to find out what work needs to be made up and to submit it on time. Tests assigned before an absence will be taken upon returning to school.

1. By extension, if any assignment was due on the day you were absent, it is due upon your return to school.

2. Ask for your assignments before school or before or after class upon your return.

3.Example for timeframe of make-up work: absent Monday, return to school

Tuesday and get assignment, assignment due on Wednesday.

Extracurricular absences are an inconvenience that you often have willingly accepted in order to participate in a favored activity. Concerning school activity absences:

In cases where a student is absent from class to attend a school sponsored activity, the student will get the assignment for the day to be missed on the day before the

absence. The assignment is to be turned in upon return to class. This policy keeps you, the student, current on assignments and maintains the integrity of the work you submit for a grade.

Academic Grades

1.Three categories of grades will be taken and count as the following percentages of each 9-weeks grade:

Tests - 50%

Quizzes - 20%

Assignments – 30%

Semester grades will be determined as follows:

1st 9-weeks grade – 40%

2nd 9-weeks grade – 40%

Semester Exam – 20%

3.Individual assignments are given a point value or “points possible”.

Example: 80 pts. poss., 60 pts. earned. To determine the percentage, divide 60 by 80 and multiply by 100. (60 / 80 = 0.75 & 0.75 x 100 = 75%)
