Karen Campusoffers a broad spectrum of market oriented programmes and it is the place to enroll for both young and old. Weofferprogrammes in Law,IT and Computing, Applied Sciences, Human Resource Management and Business at Diploma,Degree and Post graduate levels. These programmes run throughout the year on both fulltime and part-time bases. All our programmes are Senate approved programmes and teaching and examination is as defined by the JKUAT senate regulations.

Our campus is well equipped with state of the art ICT equipment and physical infrastructure that includes a modern library, modern computer laboratories and wireless internet connectivity that guaranteeshigh speed internet connectivity to both students and staff. We also have a strong team of qualified members of staff drawn from our mother institution and from other reputable institutions of higher learning in Kenya.All staff members who teach in our programmes must be approved by the University Senate.

Our students engage in various sporting activities within the campus and participate in both local and international sporting activities. There are also a variety of clubs and societies which students can join to keep them busy while out of class.

Karen campus is strategically located in Karen, deep inside the Langata neighborhood of Nairobi city yet very accessible from the city center. It enjoys a quiet serene environment with unmatched atmosphere for serious studying away from the hustle and bustle of the commercial city.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1. JKUAT KAREN CAMPUS BACKGOUND INFORMATION

The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Karen Campus opened it doors to students in February 2006. This was the first campus of jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and technology. It is situated in Karen, Nairobi, at the former Makini school facility. The facility is situated in a beautiful green and quiet environment, which is conducive for campus learning.

The first group of five (5) members of staff reported at the campus on 9th January 2006 after MakiniSchool vacated the premises. The five members of staff had the

immediate task of organizing the premise into a facility, which could be used for teaching university programmes. It was also important to advertise university programmes, which could be taught at Karen campus.

The first intake of nineteen (19) students reported on 13th February 2006 to do Certificate/Diploma in IT. The second intake of seventy eight (78) Certificate in Bridging course in Mathematics students reported on 20th March 2006. Today the campus has about 1300 registered students in eighteen (18) programmes. One of these programmes is the bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme which is one of the newest programmes of the university.

2. THE STRATEGIC PLAN

The university developed in 2004 that is, the Strategic Plan 2004-2014. However during the develpoment of that plan the campuses were not in place and therefore the idea 0r strategic objectives of the campuses were not captured. It has therefore been an opportunity for campus members to assess their strength. Weaknesses, opportunities and threatens and set out strategic objectives for the next five years, that is alongside the larger university. The campus strategic plan has been developed through

  1. Consultation with all staff members so as to get their ideas
  2. Brainstorming these ideas at the campus Board and coming up with;

-strategic objectives, workplan, assumptions and, indicators, budget

-Analysing the campus strenghths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats

3Writing a draft KC strategic plan and getting feedback from the stakeholders

4. Compiling the final KC strategic plan

5. Submitting the final KC strategic plan to the university administration

3.CHALLENGES FOR KAREN CAMPUS

Some of the Challenges experienced by Karen campus and which are addressed by this strategic plan are;

a)The need to recruit more academic staff to meet the objectives of programme development, proposal writing and research

b)The need to equip the facilities eg laboratories with equipment, computers, library books

c)The need to provide transport facilities for evening classes
