Course Title:Electronics Circuits for Renewable Energy Systems

Course Objectives:The purpose of this course is to introduction the students to the principle and application of linear analog and digital circuits, to be essential for understanding of the various renewable energy systems. The course also prepares students to Design various analog and Digital Circuits.

Module I : Basics of Analog and Digital Electronics / 25%
  • Basics of Analog signals and systems
  • Transistor action basics, Amplifiers and Oscillators
  • Barkhausen criteria of oscillation
  • Op-Amp basics
  • Role of Analog circuits in renewable energy systems
  • Digital Fundamentals: circuit and systems
  • Internal circuits of Logic Gates
  • 1`s complement and 2`s complement
  • BCD to Gray and Gray to BCD code conversion
  • Standard representation of logical functions (SOP and POS forms)
  • K-map representation and simplification of logical function up to five variables
  • don’t care conditions
  • XOR & XNOR simplifications of K-maps,
  • Application of Analog circuits in power systems
  • Role of Digital circuits in renewable energy systems

Module II Combinational Circuit Design / 25%
  • Multiplexer, de-multiplexer
  • Addition and Subtraction using Multiplexer
  • Decoder & encoder, code converters
  • 1 & 2 bit comparators
  • BCD to seven segment decoder/encoder
  • Implementation of logic functions using multiplexer/de-multiplexer and decoder
  • Implementation of 16×1 MUX using 4×1 MUX, 4×16 decoder using 3×8 decoder etc., logic implementations using PROM, PLA & PAL.

Module III Sequential Circuit Design / 25%
  • Difference between combinational and sequential circuits
  • Latch, Flip-flops: SR, JK, D & T flip flops – Truth table, Excitation table
  • Conversion of flip-flops, set up and hold time, race around condition, Master Slave flip flop
  • Shift registers: SIPO, PISO, PIPO, SIPO register
  • Counters: Asynchronous/ripple & synchronous counters – up/down,

Module IV Important Applications of Electronics Circuits / 25%
  • Filters: active filters, first order and second order LP, HP, BP and band stop filters
  • Filter response characteristics
  • Cut off frequency and roll-off
  • Data converters: Special characteristics, ADC – successive approximation, linear ramp, dual slope; DAC – Binary Weighted, R-2R ladder type.
  • Wien bridge oscillator

Student Learning Outcomes:

  • To demonstrate knowledge of basic electronics in renewable energy
  • To apply classroom based knowledge in practical to get hands on training in various circuits

Pedagogy for Course Delivery:

(a)Lecture Plan/Session Plan :

The class will be taught using theory/Practical covering from standard text books. In addition the course instructor will update the knowledge of latest state of art of the respective subjects from various media. The instructor will cover the ways to analyse experimental data and think innovatively and liberally

EXPERIMENTS:
  1. To obtain half and full Subtractor using logic gates (any) and verify their truth tables.
  2. To verify the truth table of MUX and DEMUX using NAND gates.
  3. To design and verify the full Adder and Subtractor using multiplexer.
  4. To verify the truth tables of RS, D, JK and T flip- flops.
  5. To trace the characteristics of Common Base and Common Emitter NPN or PNP Transistor.
  6. To design a ramp and a square wave generator/oscillator using OP-AMP.
