Education Council

405 Emmet Street South ▪ Charlottesville, VA 22904

Dear New Student,

It is our pleasure to welcome you to the Curry School of Education. We are delighted that you have chosen to advance your academic career here at the University of Virginia and we look forward to working toward making your time here pleasant and productive.

Toward that end, we have put together this brief guide to getting settled here at Curry. During our first few weeks on grounds we went through the barrage of new information you are probably encountering right now, and we know that it can be overwhelming. While all of this information will be useful at some point during your time here, there are a few items in particular that are essential to your early success. This guide is our attempt to spell out the steps you should take in order to hit the ground running.

As you embark on your journey here at Curry, know that we are fellow students eager to help you on your way. Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of any assistance to you.

All the best,

Get Moving!

Most Curry students live off-grounds, and unfortunately like many universities, UVa suffers from a lack of on-grounds parking. Unless you plan on augmenting the budget of Parking and Transportation Services (PTS), you should familiarize yourself with the parking restrictions immediately. A good rule of thumb for parking on-grounds is if you do not have a permit, have not fed a parking meter, or are not parked in a garage, then you are probably illegally parked. With the exception of the lot directly behind Ruffner Hall, which is an open lot after 5:00 PM M-F & all day Saturday and Sunday, all parking lots surrounding Curry are restricted 24 hours. Most Curry students park at University Hall, the Emmet/Ivy Garage, or Scott Stadium and either catch a shuttle or walk to Ruffner.

For more information about permit parking, visit:

The University Transit Service (UTS) operates a number of bus lines that run across grounds. For a list of all UTS bus lines and schedules, visit:

The key to surviving long days around Curry is to know your resources. Knowing where to grab a quick bite of food or a quick shot of caffeine between classes can make consecutive classes more worthwhile. What follows is a brief list of a few local “hotspots” within walking distance of the Curry buildings. If you don’t know where something is, ask a fellow student, a professor, or feel free to contact any officer of Ed Council!
