Objective(s)
Students will understand the components of a budget.
Students can create and calculate an individualized budget.
Students are able to keep financial records to assist in planning.
Students can demonstrate effective decision making in spending and saving.
Bell ringer (opener)
Make a list of your purchases over the last four weeks.
Plan: Describe the activities you will do during the class period.
Discuss bell ringer- wants vs needs. Income needed to purchase items, etc. Introduce cash flow- possible compare to tides of the ocean.
PPT- budgeting : students take cornell style notes while powerpoint is discussed (income, expenses, fixed vs variable)
Students work in small groups of three to evaluate three mock budgets, worksheet “Budget Busters: Who’s breaking the Bank?”. Their challenge will be to decide which budget is the most effective in meeting the budgeter’s individual goals. What adjustments could be made to meet the goal sooner? What other suggestions do the students have for the budgeter?
As students finish, assign students “Budget 101: How to Get it Done” individually
*Students must determine how much money they can spend on different various categories based on a given income.
Groupings: Describe how students are grouped.
Individual and small group work.
