Establishing and Sustaining a Shed.

Key establishment Bench Marks.

-2009 held a Public Meeting –to establish a Need for a Shed , elect a interim establishment committee, establish a list of interested potential members

- Found a Reputable HOST organization, Rotary can be lions,local council, etc

-2010 Become incorporated

-Monthly meet regularly to create goals, eg what type of shed, community or mens only, to get your message out their distribute to local press,councils.

--Apply for Land or building, there is Always spare land owned by councils, state, commonwealth

-2010 Council offered current site

-2010 Developed a business Plan future income and expend, activities

-2010 applied for Lotterwest funding to build a Community mens shed

-Monthly Informed our community via newsletters and potential members

-2011 Turned !st SOD ,Built and created a Community Shed

-Equip Shed, Take Everthingoffered , you can sell it later or swap with other groups

-We strove to put all off our $ into building and equip will follow later

-July 2012 Called for financial members [currently 104] estimate 250 by 2013

-Completion mid October 2012incl access road, site for future swap mart

Late November 2012 Official opening

SUSTAINABILITY

All sheds need funds to operate from, such as

-membership

-donations $ or kind or materials and equip

-inform your members they are your greatest wealth

Our Shed is a Urban Regional Community Shed covering Four Councils

-We decided to open 7 days a week

-Employ a fulltime Shed Boss

-Create Volunteer shed bosses

-Offer a wide range of activities that the men wanted ,woodwork, steel,alluminum,cooking,computers,gardening,leisure,wooden boat building,vintage car restoration,electronics model planes ,kite build,mentoring youth, stamp collecting,etc

-Become self sustainable by JULY 2013[ councils cont. $70,000pa for 2011 and 2012 to fund shed project manager/boss]

-Create a home and storage for Rotary Mosman Park[ now contributed $83,000.00] 3 of our exec are Rotarians as per our constitution.

INCOME streams anticipated

GRANTS

-AMSA for equipment

-Health Organisations = grants or Fee for Service Mens Wellbeing

-Council Community grants

-Crime Prevention , mentoring etc

-Commercial , banks/bunnings/Telstra /officeworksother local small companies

SALES

-Produce from Shed, pot plants/toys/etc

-fund raising events, eg postie bike challenge we recently hosted now have 10 postie bikes to sell will raise $10,000 [sorry now only 8]

-donated excess equipment sell or swap

-Swap mart creating [commencing 21st Oct] at the Shed access road

-Room hire, may create a sound proof studio for music groups

SUBS – members and corporate

EXPEPENDITURE

-keep low - reduce power needs/ water, etc

- accept any donated goods you can sell later[ must have storage] we currently are hiring 3 x 40 foot container

-accept all donated materials – someone will want it?

- try to fund renewable energy sources, rain water recycling, solar power, wind power etc

-create green practices around the shed.

To be sustainable create basic practises early , stick to basics create a warm friendly community for your members and respect everyone.
