Job Description

JOB TITLE: General Ledger Accountant

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting activities of AHI, ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and IRS guidelines. Works with the Chief Executive Offerto implement and maintain policies and procedures relating to financial accounting systems, accounts payable, budgeting, general ledger, miscellaneous receivables, cash disbursements, financial statements and tax information. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

SUPERVISON RECEIVED: Reports to Business Operations Director

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Combination of sitting, standing, bending, stooping, and twisting. Requires sitting for long periods of time. Must be able to lift/carry up to 25 pounds. Working under stress and use of telephone required. Manual dexterity required for use of calculator and computer keyboard.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in a busy office environment. Frequent contact with employees and outside agencies. Occasional evening or weekend work.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (This list may not include all of the duties assigned.)

  1. Develops section objectives and organizes the work of the Accounting section.
  1. Works with the Business Operations Director to develop plans and objectives regarding financial planning, internal controls, budgeting, accounting systems, reporting, and internal auditing.
  1. Responds to inquiries from the Business Operations Director, Chief Executive Officer, and managers regarding financial results, and special reporting requests.
  1. Maintains and updates the chart of accounts, departments, and reporting groupsfollowing the direction of the Business Operations Director.
  1. Ensures the timely payment of current liabilities to creditors, proper posting to the chart of accounts, proper recording and control of cash receipts, and recording of fixed assets.
  1. Reviews accounts payable invoices to ensure appropriate account code assignment. Supervises AP Clerk, ensures that all accounts payable are recorded correctly and all bills are paid timely.
  1. Maintains relationships with bank representatives and vendors regarding accounts.
  1. Prepares employed physicians’ compensation and member physicians’ compensation on a monthly basis following the direction of the Business Operations Director.
  1. Calculates and prepares retirement contributions for eligible physicians and staff on a monthly basis. Maintains documentation for disbursement of reserve amounts at the end of the year.
  1. Reviews and confirms retirement accounts and examines records of employing entities to ensure compliance with prescribed standards and regulations.
  1. Maintains and files paperwork relating to financial transactions.
  1. Balances General Ledger accounts to Patient Accounts Receivable. Identifies correcting entries necessary to balance.
  1. Prepares monthly preliminary financial statements (profit and loss, balance sheet), reviews results with the Controller and makes revisions as necessary. Prepares monthly books for AHI accounting firm to use in preparation of the monthly financial statements. Assists as needed in the creation of journal entries, makes needed revisions as requested by management.
  1. Works with AHI accounting firm to supply them with information necessary to ensure integrity of finance department relating to proper journal entries, tax implications, etc.
  1. Participates in educational activities.
  1. Maintains strictest confidentiality.
  1. Performs related work as required.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge:

  1. Knowledge of standard organizational policies and procedures.
  2. Knowledge of computerized accounting programs.
  3. Knowledge of finance and accounting practices including budgeting, accounts payable, journal entry, reconciliation and internal controls.
  4. Knowledge of management practices to direct assigned staff.

Skills:

  1. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with Institute personnel, patients, and the public.
  2. Skill in gathering, analyzing and interpreting information for completeness and correctness.
  3. Skill in computer applications; Excel, Word, accounting programs.

Abilities:

  1. Ability to maintain strictest confidentiality of financial and personnel matters.
  2. Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  3. Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  4. Ability to perform mathematical computations.
  5. Ability to be highly efficient, organized and accurate in all work.

Education:

Associates degree in Accounting or a Business-related field.

Experience:

Three to five years prior bookkeeping/accounting experience with extensive accounts payable experience. Strong communications skills, attention to detail, and the ability to perform work in an accurate and efficient manner. Experience with Sage 100 accounting system, and prior experience in a healthcare setting preferred. High level expertise in excel.

Alternative to Minimum Qualifications:

Five or more years of full-charge bookkeeping experience in a company with expenses exceeding four million dollars per year.
