Dear JCL Chapter or Latin Club,

The East Aurora JCL is hosting the annual Fall Festival on Saturday, November 19, 2011, at East Aurora High School in E. Aurora, N.Y. E. Aurora is a southeastern suburb of Buffalo and it is our hope that many schools will be able to attend this event. Please note that the festival begins at 1 P.M. and concludes at 9 P.M.

The cost of the festival is $20 per student and $10 per adult. For the student, this includes registration, dinner, awards, and entertainment. For the adults, the cost covers the dinner. Registrations must be postmarked by Saturday, October 29th . Please include ONE check payable to the E. Aurora Schoolsand a list of participants and chaperones with your registration sheets.

Please read the following information carefully:

1.PERMISSION SLIPS Each participant is required to have written

permission of a parent to attend. A sample form is enclosed.

The permission slip must be in the possession of the local sponsor.

2.ATHLETIC PERMISSION Each student participating in volleyball or

basketball must have the express permission of a parent to compete. Signature of the

school’s nurse is required. Athletic officials will request to see this. before a student is allowd to participate. A sample form is included. enclosed. The permission slip must be in the possession of the losponsor.

3.RULES Participants are advised of the following rules established

by NYSJCL:

a. NO smoking on school grounds.

b. NO use of illegal substances (e.g. alcohol, drugs)

c. NO leaving the school building.

d. NO entering rooms or areas which have not been designated

for this event.

e. NO food or drink is allowed in the auditorium, gymnasium or classrooms..

f. Athletic or rubber-soled shoes ONLY are allowed on the gym floor.

g. Bullae (nametags) must be worn at all times. They are your dinner

tickets.

h. ANY sponsor or chaperone is directed to correct inappropriate behavior.

i. Valuables cannot be secured and should be left at home.

j. RESPECTFULNESS and SPORTSMANSHIP are paramount!

4. CHAPERONES Adult supervision is very important for the safety and enjoyment of all participants. Sponsors must provide ONE ADULT CHAPERONE FOR EVERY 15 STUDENTS. All sponsors and chaperones will be assigned supervisory duties.

5. REGISTRATION Schools should arrive between 12:30 P.M. and 1 P.M. Register your group in the front lobby of the school. Once registered,groups will proceed to the gym for the general assembly.

6. ATTENDANCE Every student must be involved in an activity at all times.

7. ACADEMICS Five academic tests will be given for 6 different levels of

Latin: Level 1/2 (Jr. High students who will complete Latin I next year);

Level I-A (students taking Latin I for the first time); Level I-B(students

who took Level 1/2 last year); Level II; Level III, and Level IV/V.

8. CERTAMEN Each school may enter TWO TEAMS AT EACH LEVEL.

Students involved in certamen should understand that this event takes precedence

over all others, including Volleyball. receives priority over any other activity. Students MAY NOT switch teams during the certamen session.

9.OPEN CERTAMEN will be offered following competitive certamen. This

is played with mixed teams for fun and increased participation.

10.VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT

a.There are two levels of competition: Junior High (Grades 7, 8, & 9) and Senior

High (Grades 10, 11, and 12). Senior High students may NOT play on a Junior

High team. A student may play on ONLY one team.

b.A team may consist of 6 to 10 players with 6 players on the floor at

one time. AT LEAST TWO PLAYERS ON THE FLOOR MUST BE GIRLS.

c.Each school may enter two teams at each level. If there are not

enough students for a team, the school may opt to join a mixed team.

d. All teams must be pre-registered.

e. Written permission to participate from a parent and the school nurse

is required.

11.BASKETBALL SHOOTOUT This is a timed event for individuals. participants. Points accrue for the number of baskets scored fromnine designated spots on the court.

12.PING PONG Each participant must bring his/her own paddle and balls.

Since ping pong and volleyball are offered at the same time, some

students will have to choose between the two events. Both events MUST be

pre-registered. Students are expected to honor their commitments.

13.CHESS This tournament will be single elimination. Please bring a chess

set.

14.T-SHIRT DESIGN CONTESTWe encourage each Latin Club/ JCL

Chapter to design a school specific tee-shirt with a JCL/Latin theme and wear it to the Fall Festival. There will be a judging and the winning chapter will receive a prize.

15.POSTER CONTEST Posters MUST illustrate the relevance of Latin study or promote JCL. Only posters with one of these expressed themes will be judged.

The poster needs to attract instant attention, convey a message, and SELL its theme. ENTRIES MUSTBE POSTERS, NOT DRAWINGS WITH A CLASSICAL THEME.

16. ORATORY CONTEST This event is new to the Fall Festival. Schools are

encouraged to enter students at all levels. The passage to be delivered has been

included in this packet. Students will compete with other students at their level of

enrollment in Latin. The levels correspond to the same levels in Certamen.

Please note that the East Aurora JCL will be selling snacks and beverages throughout the afternoon. Your students may wish to bring a small amount of cash with them to purchase these refreshments.

Directionsfrom the East:

-Take the I – 90 West to Exit 54 and merge onto the NY-400 South towards East Aurora/ West Seneca

-Travel along the NY – 400 for 10 miles.

-Take the Maple Street Exit towards Maple Street

-Turn Rightonto Maple Street and travel 2 miles south to where Maple Street intersects Main Street

-Turn Right onto Main Street, and then after a few hundred feet turn an immediate left onto Center Street.

-Travel down Center Street for 2.5 miles south and your destination, East Aurora High School, 1003 Center Steet, East Aurora, NY 14052 will appear on your right.
