Main purpose of job:
To work alongside staff delivering a new youth programme at the Whitworth Art Gallery. To help develop on-line marketing for 15-25 year olds. To support young people on events and creative activities.
Creative Employment Programme - This role has been created as part of the Creative Employment Programme. The Creative Employment Programme is an Arts Council England fund to support the creation of traineeships, formal apprenticeship and paid internship opportunities in England for unemployed young people wishing to pursue a career in the arts and cultural sector. There are certain criteria you must meet in order to be eligible to apply for a Creative Employment Programme funded role. Apprentices can be between 16 and 24, with Internships for ages between 18 to 24 years old. The roles are for unemployed young people and for Internships and you must be registered as unemployed with Jobcentre Plus, for Apprenticeships you must be unemployed and not in Education, Training or Employment. These eligibility criteria have been approved by the Department of Work and Pensions.

Due to the nature of the role, the intern will be working some irregular hours including some evening and weekend work.

The Youth Development Intern will work on the Circuit Programme. Circuit is a four year national programme connecting 15–25 year olds to the arts in galleries and museums working in partnership with the youth and cultural sector. Led by Tate and funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, it provides opportunities for young people to steer their own learning and create cultural activity across art disciplines.
Key CIRCUIT programme objectives
Accessible entry points: To create entry points for young people into cultural opportunities at the Whitworth Art Gallery.
Improved experiences: To generate a programme of benefit with and for young people socially, emotionally and cognitively.
Hardest to reach: To open dialogue and opportunity for those with least voice and access.
Participatory practice: To generate conditions for young people to take control of their own cultural production and learning.
Progression: To create systems of progression for young people through the cultural and youth organisations and other partners where appropriate.
Youth and Cultural Sectors: To improve and develop strategic and professional working relationships between the sectors.
The Youth Development Intern will work alongside Learning and Engagement Team, Collections staff, Visitor Services Team, other Youth Organisations, Manchester City Council, Cultural Partner Organisations, Youth Charities and University staff.
Key result areas/key tasks/main duties.
Working with other staff, the intern will have a range of duties, including:
· To help us develop new youth activities and events at the Whitworth Art Gallery. To work closely with young people and staff to bring the Whitworth to life for a 15-25 year old audience
· To promote the youth programme, online and face to face. To support and encourage young people’s participation
· To help staff and young people get feedback and measure the success of the project.
· To record events and activities, with photographs, written or online.
· To help plan celebrations for the Whitworth’s re-opening in 2014.
· To help us develop a new website for the youth programme.
· To represent the programme at meetings with other staff and organisations.
· To represent the Whitworth’s values in the work you do.

The successful applicant must have these knowledge and skills:
· Good communication and presentation skills and the ability to engage with a wide range of people.
· Interest in working with Young People to develop their creativity.
· Ability to understand and follow Safeguarding procedures.
· Awareness of the importance of keeping information confidential.
· Ability to work professionally and maintain boundaries.
· Ability to use a computer and familiar with the internet.
· Commitment to equal opportunities.
· The intern must also be prepared to attend training opportunities and develop as a professional.
