The First Sunday after Christmas

1030am 31 December AD 2017

The Nativity - Giotto

When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

Matthew1:25

First Sunday after Christmas

(Service setting: Merbecke)

Opening hymn: 51 From heaven high I come to you

Our worship continues on page 1 of the liturgy booklets.

The Collect:Almighty God, who hast given us thy only-begotten Son to take our nature upon him, and as at this time to be born of a pure Virgin; Grant that we being regenerate, and made thy children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by thy Holy Spirit; through our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the same Spirit, ever one God, world without end.

Amen.

The Epistle: Galatians 4:1-7

I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no different from a slave, though he is the owner of everything, but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by his father. In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world. But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 45: 1-7

MY heart is inditing of a ’ good ’ matter : I speak of the things which I have ’ made ’ unto the ’ King.

2 My tongue is the ’ pen : of a ’ ready ’ writer.

3 Thou art fairer than the ’ children of ’ men : full of grace are thy lips, because God hath ’ blessed ’ thee for ’ ever.

4 Gird thee with thy sword upon thy thigh O ’ thou most ’ Mighty : according to thy ’ worship ’ and re’nown.

5 Good luck have thou ’ with thine ’ honour : ride on because of the word of truth, of meekness and righteousness, and thy right hand shall ’ teach thee ’ terrible ’ things.

6 Thy arrows are very sharp, and the people shall be subdued ’ unto ’ thee : even in the midst a’mong the ’ King's ’ enemies.

7 Thy seat O God en’dureth for ’ ever : the sceptre of thy kingdom ’ is a ’ right ’ sceptre.

Glory be to the Father ’ and to • the ’ Son : and ’ to the ’ Holy ’ Ghost;

As it was in the beginning is ’ now and • ever ’ shall be : world without ’ end. A ’ — ’ men.

The GospelSt. Matthew 1:18-25

When the Gospel is announced we respond: Glory to you, O Lord

Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,

and they shall call his name Immanuel”

(which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

After the Gospel is read we say: Praise to you, O Christ
