August 2016

Dear Summit High School Parents and Guardians,

I hope that you and your family have enjoyed a relaxing summer. All of us at Summit High School have been working diligently to prepare for the start of another school year. I would like to welcome back our returning students and families and extend a special welcome to our new students and families.

It is my pleasure to welcome Assistant Principal, Mr. Nicholas Steffner and Athletic Director, Dr. Patrick Scarpello to the Summit High School administrative team. Mr. Steffner joined the team in July and is excited to begin working with Summit High School students and staff. Dr. Scarpello has already begun working with the fall sports teams. In addition, we have several new teachers joining our staff this year.

The following information will help you and your child prepare for the beginning of the upcoming school year:

Beginning of School: School begins on Thursday, September 8, 2016. The first two days of school will be E days, and students will attend all eight classes on these days.

Entrances into Building: In the morning, there will be three entrances to the school open for students. They are the entrance along Kent Place Blvd., the main office entrance, and the entrance by the gymnasium.

Drop-Off: Parking and traffic in and around the high school will be difficult once again this year. When dropping off your student in the morning along the driveway please pull all the up before stopping to let your student out.

Student Handbook: Students will receive the student handbook on the opening day of school. Please take some time to review it with your student as it outlines our expectations for behavior and attendance. A copy of the handbook is also available under the resources tab on the high school website.

Student Pictures: Student pictures will be taken during Physical Education classes on September 9th, 12th, and 13th. Information about purchasing pictures is included in the other mailing. All students must have pictures taken so that we can provide each student with an ID card even if they are not purchasing photos.

Morning Study Hall Delayed Arrival: During the first week of school, students in morning study halls will receive information regarding delayed entry on the days that study hall occurs during the first time block. Permission forms must be completed and submitted before students are permitted to arrive late.

PE Independent Study: Physical Education Independent Study will run again this year. Once team rosters are completed, information and the required forms will be available for student athletes in grades 10 through 12.

Chromebooks: The 1-1 Chromebook program will be expanded this year to include students in all four grades. Thank you to the Summit Education Foundation for their continued support with this initiative. All students will be able to receive their Chromebooks within the first few weeks of school.

Contact Information Sheet: Enclosed is the contact information we currently have in PowerSchool for you and your student. Please review, correct, and return this sheet so we can update PowerSchool accordingly. We send frequent communications to parent/guardians emails about school events.

We are looking forward to another successful year at Summit High School. The accomplishments of our students stem from the partnership between the school and you as parents and guardians. I encourage you to attend our programs and events, and reach out with any questions or concerns that you may have. Please communicate with the staff closest to an issue – teachers, coaches, and advisors, before supervisors and administration.

I look forward to seeing you at the many fall events that will be held at Summit High School. Please be reminded that Back to School Night is Thursday, September 29th. More information about this evening will be shared at a later time.

Thank you for your continued support of Summit High School.

Sincerely,

Stacy Grimaldi

Principal
