UDS E-NEWS
JOIN UDS FOR ADVENTURES ALONG THE OREGON TRAIL
2010
We are so excited about this year’s festival that we had to share. So, in an effort to keep everyone informed about all the neat stuff we have planned for this year, jean and I have decided to publish an e-newsletter from time to time.
The Oregon Trail
Location/Date
UDS will again meet in Texarkana, Arkansas for the 2010 Festival. Our festival will begin on Monday, October 11, 2010 with a welcoming party. We will start the business of having fun on Tuesday morning with the first paid workshop. The festival will continue through Thursday, October 14 concluding with the presentation of the doll competition awards, and the auction. We want to encourage each of you to start to think about what you want to donate to the UDS auction and/or raffle. These items are always appreciated, and in a future edition of UDS e-news we will tell you who to deliver your items to, etc.
Also, remember that the Great Mystic Mold Doll Show and Sale will begin on Friday, October 15. Steve has already lined up several great people who will give workshops and demonstrations including our own fearless leader, Jean Castille, and of course, you can “shop ‘till you drop”.

Workshops
UDS prides itself on its workshops. Not only are they always reasonably priced, they represent some of the most current and popular projects in the doll making. Although all available spots for workshops are taken for the 2010 festival, Jean would like to encourage anyone interested in presenting a workshop for the 2011 festival to prepare a sample for approval by the board. Workshop guidelines can be obtained from Jean Castille, or Patsy Meyer. If you are thinking of doing a workshop proposal, here are a few things to keep in mind. 1. The cost of the workshop must be $50. 00 or less. 2. The workshop should be designed so that it can be completed in approximately 3 hours. 3. All workshops must be pre-approved by the board before they can be added to the festival list.
FYI - Good places to find inspiration for UDS workshops are your antique doll books, and doll magazines.

Luncheons
Free luncheon projects are also an integral part of the UDS experience. These are done by volunteers. This year the luncheon projects are all related to the UDS theme of Adventures Along the Oregon Trail. I wish I could let you know what they are, but you will just have wait and see. I can tell you this however, you will love doing them!!!

More stuff -
In February, Jean is giving a workshop in her Louisiana studio using BECKY’S BOYS molds from the Bell Collection. Some of you might be unable to attend, but she wants you to know that she will have a kit available for purchase at UDS or by mail, if you pre-order. The kit will include 5 heads, one body, one pair of eyes, tech sheets for cutting the eyes and painting, and a pattern to use to reproduce those adorable outfits the boys are wearing. Please contact Jean at to order.

UDS Challenge
The UDS Challenge doll was a big success last year, and we have decided to do it again!
The winner of the 2010 festival challenge will be the doll that best represents the theme of Adventures Along the Oregon Trail. There will not be a ‘pattern’ distributed this year; rather we will leave the designing of the costume to your creative imaginations’. We have also decided that the Challenge doll can be either the 10/12 inch Dianna Effner doll or the Bleuette. The winner will be chosen by popular vote during the banquet. Jean has a very special prize for the lucky winner. Good Luck to all.

UDS Garage Sale
From time to time we have wonderful items left over from workshops, luncheons, or from the UDS Festival Gift to members. We now have a few of the feather duster half-dolls remaining from the 2009 banquet. If you are interested in purchasing one of these great little gifts, please contact me at . The cost is $35.00 to UDS members.

Some Final Thoughts
Every member of UDS was affected in some way by tragedy last year. Some of our members lost loved ones; others had very close calls with personal illnesses; all of us mourn the loss of two very close friends and valued members. Yet we all try to carry on and do the best we can to honor the memory of those dear to us.
Jean and I feel that the friends we have at UDS are like family, and we cherish every one of you. We want to thank you for your patronage in the past, and look forward to many more happy years together.
