The May Fotheringham Fund was established as an endowment in 1971, following the death of Mrs May Fotheringham, who bequeathed a portion of her estate to the Women's and Children's Hospital.
May Fotheringham Fellowships are offered for research/study or professional development to non-medical staff who wish to undertake such a program in Australia or overseas. The value of the award is up to $5000.
Successful applicants are required to sign an agreement, the conditions being:
a)the award of the Fellowship implies recognition of the Fellow’s achievement in a particular field of work and that the Fellowship will further his/her work in that field. Therefore the Committee reserves the right to cancel or terminate the Fellowship if the Fellow changes employment or vocation
b)the Fellow returns to work at Children, Youth and Women's Health Service (CYWHS) for at least one year after the completion of the Fellowship
c)the Fellow shall devote the whole of his/her time to the requirements of the Fellowship. Activities outside the scope of the Fellowship and paid work may not be undertaken except with the prior written consent of the Committee
d)within in six weeks of completion of the Fellowship, a written report, including a financial statement, is to be submitted to the Research Secretariat, CYWHS, 72 King William Rd, North Adelaide, 5006; marked Attention: Women's and Children's Hospital Foundation Inc–May Fotheringham Fellowship.
e)any publication by the Fellow describing the work which has been supported wholly or partly by the Fellowship shall make due acknowledgment of such support
f)illness which reduces the effective tenure of the Fellowship, shall not automatically entitle the Fellow to an extension of the original period of tenure, but the Committee may, on application, grant any extension that it thinks fit
g)the Fellow will be responsible for obtaining all necessary passports, visas, etc required for the countries to be visited. The Fellow shall make adequate arrangements for health and accident insurance prior to taking up the Fellowship, these matters not being the responsibility of the Committee. Before departure, the Fellow must submit and obtain the approval of the Chief Executive or delegate for the final program and any itinerary requiring overseas travel. Any modification to the final program and itinerary must have the prior approval of the Foundation
h)the Fellowship may be suspended or terminated before the approved completion date, either at the Fellow’s request or on the recommendation to the Foundation by the Committee if:
- performance is unsatisfactory, or
- the Fellow has failed to observe the conditions governing the Fellowship, or
- the Fellow is guilty of misconduct
i)applications for Fellowships must be endorsed by Departmental managers and/or Divisional Chiefs. Departments are responsible for ensuring that suitable backfill arrangements are made. The WCH Foundation will not provide funds for backfilling a position.
j)the Fellow agrees to be bound by the ‘Contract and Conditions of the Award’ as agreed and signed between the Committee and the Fellow
