Information Sheet

Install New Posts, Cross Pieces and Fence Boards

HDR will purchase and install 4”x 4” pressure treated Douglas fir (PTDF) posts. We will set them plumb and at 8’0” on center and install them in holes that are equal to one quarter of the height of the post. The hole is lined with gravel to help drainage and extend the life of the post and then the hole is filled with fence post cement. The top of the cement will be domed to allow rain or sprinkler water to run off and away from the post.

After the posts have been properly set and the cement has hardened, we will return and construct one of the following types of fences. The first type is an assembled wood fence. We will nail two 2” x 4” PTDF cross pieces on the 4” x 4”. We will then attach redwood 1”x 6” redwood construction grade (with some knots) fence boards 72” high nailed with galvanized nails. This type of fence may or may not have lattice at the top. The second type is sections of fencing which are pre-assembled and do not require cross pieces. The third type is metal deer fence or welded wire attached to the posts. In all cases a 1”x 6” kicker board at the bottom of the fence can be install at an additional charge.

Codes: Most codes require that the fence on a property line be limited to 6’ high. The City of Oakland states that for “fences, dense hedges, retaining, screening and similar walls; and earthen mounds and embankments and other fill: in a yard or court provides that:

·  Shall not exceed the following heights above the required level of the yard or court except upon the granting of a conditional use permit pursuant to the Conditional Use Permit Procedure at Section 9200

·  A minimum front yard or any minimum side yard on the street side of a corner lot: six feet and in any other minimum yard or court eight feet.

Gates: Gates are normally constructed of 2 x 4” PTDF framing material with construction grade redwood 1 x 6” affixed with galvanized nails or screws. Gate hardware, hinges, latches, but not locks are normally included in the contract. We may also use metal pre-made gate assemblies upon which the 1 x 6” are attached. This extends the life of the gate but lacks the finished look of a matching wood gate.

Notes: There is normally an extra charge for the following:

Removal of soil excavated from the fence post holes or other debris.

Removal of unforeseen roots or concrete below grade

Removal of bushes, small trees, and plants.

Stain the fence after completion

If there is excessive slope on the property.

Other Notes:

Do not burn pained wood or pressure treated wood in your fireplace

We use OXIDE formulated pressure treated wood on most of our fence projects.
