Purpose

Toprovide theemployeewith thetoolstoprevent injurytothemselvesandothersas theyperform theirnewjob. Theorientationhelpsensurethat PLU isincompliancewith stateandfederalworkplacesafetyregulations.

DepartmentReportingProcedures

Tell yournewemployee(s) toimmediatelyreportaccidents, incidents, near misses, motorvehicleaccidentsandanyunsafeconditionsor actstheirsupervisor.

ReportingAccidentsand Incidents

Tell employeesthat work-relatedinjuriesor illnesses resultinginmedical expenses or timelossarecoveredbyWashingtonState’sWorkers’ Compensation.To establishaWorkers’ Compensationclaim, employees mustfill out aState Department ofLabor andIndustries(L&I)Report ofIndustrial InjuryorOccupational Diseaseat their medicalprovider’sofficewhen theyreceive medical careforawork- relatedinjuryor illness. PotentialHazardsontheJob

Therearehazardsineveryperson’sjobatPLU.Some, suchasFacilities, have more hazards thanothers, suchasAdmissions.Identifytheinherent hazardsinthe employee’sworkenvironment andhowtoprotectthemselvesfrom thosehazards.

ReportingHazards

Explain thatemployeesshould takeresponsibilityfor correctingunsafeconditions whenfeasible,e.g., wipingupsmall,nontoxicspillsand removing trippinghazards. Otherwise,employeesshould reporthazardstotheirsupervisor, andthensupervisor needs totakeactionontheissue. Physical hazardsshouldbereportedtoFacilities. Youcanalsoreport hazardstoEH&S oryour safetycommitteerepresentative.You canusetheSafety HazardReportFormonthewebsite.

PersonalProtectiveEquipment (PPE)

Describewhatthealarm inyourbuildingsounds like (abell, chimes,aslow whoop).Somebuildingshavesmokedetectorsandno pull stations. SomebuildingalarmsalertCampus Safetyandothersdonot.Know how yoursystemworks.

•Tell yournewemployees that theymustleave thebuildingimmediatelyupon hearing thealarm, closingdoorsbehindthem.

•Whenemployeesdiscoverafiretheyshouldfirst, pull thenearest firealarmpull stationandthenexit thealarmedarea. If possible,employeesshouldfollowup withatelephonecall toCampusSafety(x7911) fromasafelocationtoprovide moredetails.

PortableFireExtinguishers

Showtheemployee(s)whereportablefireextinguishersarelocated. Tellthem touse aportablefireextinguisheronlyif:

Safety isimportantbecausewecareaboutouremployeesandeachother. It reduces

ourpremiumsonworkerscompensationinsurance,increasesproductivityandefficiency whenpeoplearenot injured, sendsmessagetoemployees that theyareimportant, managesregulatorycompliance,etc.

Conductanon-the-jobreviewofthepracticesnecessarytoperform theinitial job assignments inasafemanner. Employeesshouldunderstandthat supervisorswill provide jobsafety instructionandinspectionona continuingbasis. Reviewsafetyrulesfor your department.

EmployeeSafetyandHealthTraining

Use theSafetyTrainingChecklist onthewebsitetoidentifythetraining that thenew employeewill be required totakefor their job.Recommendedclassescouldalsobe identified,butprioritymustbegiven toarrangingthe requiredhealthandsafety training classes.
