Member Protection Information Officer for

Recreation and Sport

Information

Active For Life

The MPIO’s role is to provide appropriate advice to the organisation and affiliated clubs around their Member Protection Policy when issues arise. The MPIO is also responsible for providing information about a person’s rights, responsibilities and options to an individual making a complaint or raising a concern, as well as support during the process.

The MPIO does not investigate or attempt to resolve a complaint.

The Office for Recreation and Sport recommends that state sport and active recreation organisations and regional sport associations aim to appoint one or two Member Protection Information Officer’s (MPIO).

The person who undertakes the MPIO role can be a staff member or a designated volunteer of the state or regional association. Ideally they will have effective communication and listening skills with a good general knowledge of your organisation. It is recommended that a CEO/General Manager or President/Chairperson not also be the MPIO as this can place them in a conflict position when it comes to resolving issues. The MPIO should be nominated/appointed to the role by the Board so that they are protected by the organisations insurance cover and where a volunteer is appointed, by the Volunteers Protection Act.

To become an MPIO and be registered with the Australian Sports Commission a person must

  1. register for the onlinetraining on and complete the

  1. attend a 3 hour face to face training which will be held at the Office for Recreation and Sport.
