I. Call to Order/Welcome:

• Chair, Matt Jones, called to order the meeting of the Administrative Staff Council at 8:30 a.m. in the Simmons Room of the Alumni Building.

II. Approval of Minutes:

•  Minutes from the November meeting were distributed by e-mail. Bert Herbison made a motion to approve the minutes. Rodney Martin seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously by the membership.

V. Committee Reports:

•  Incentives and Recognition, Bert Herbison

The Smile on You award for December had not been presented on meeting date; therefore, it was not announced.

The Employee of the Month was awarded to Lee Curry, painter in facilities management.

The Quarterly birthday party had 26 in attendance. Five drawings were held: Alice Dixon, Jackie Dillard, Elsie Lynn Ervin, Donna Fitzgerald, and Cynthia Rocconi

In January, the annual Employee of the Month luncheon will be help (around January 27) Dr. Robinson, sponsor of the employee of the month, has a January birthday and his birthday will be celebrated at this time as well.

•  Projects, Marilyn Read

The Feed a Family project was a huge success. Thanks to everyone who participated. Fifty-seven completed bags were delivered to the Bolivar County Family and Children’s Services office on November 13, 2012. Approximately 31 miscellaneous bags were given to various food pantries.

Staff Council has agreed to adopt 15 children; all have been adopted. The wrapped and labeled gifts should be brought to Marilyn Read’s office by noon on Monday, December 10. These gifts will be delivered to the Bolivar County Family and Children’s Services office on December 12, 2012, in time for their annual Christmas Party. Matt announced that the cabinet has agreed to adopt a child as well.

•  Salaries & Benefits, Justin Chandler

Justin Chandler has agreed to chair the salaries and benefits committee and reestablish it as an advocacy committee.

•  Staff Development, SC Executive Committee

Matt Jones is scheduled to meet with Greg Redlin to discuss funds for the Staff Development Committee.

•  Year of Service, Christy Riddle

Christy Riddle thanked Staff Council and VISTA for participating in the Stuff a Bus project.

The annual community luncheon was held on November 27, 2012. Thirteen community awards were given; and 4 student awards.

Plans for the spring are underway.

Emily Jones announced that volunteers are needed for the iceless ice skating down town. Volunteers are needed in 2 hour increments to collect money on December 19-21, 2012.

VIII. Announcements:

•  Matt announced that on December 11, 2012, that the Presidential search committee will see who has applied for the position. On December 13, 2012, applicants will be reviewed. January 7, 2013 is the preferred candidate date.

•  Richard Houston announced that a grant had been received that central focus is Suicide Prevention. Tomeka Dean is the Project Director and the major roll out will be in the spring. The national talk line will be posted 1-800-273-TALK.

•  Christy Riddle introduced Davlon Miller has the new director of Career Services. Davlon is a DSU graduate and a veteran.

•  Christy Riddle announced that there are 65 international students some of which may be on campus during the holidays. Volunteers may be needed to have a student over for dinner at times during the holidays.

•  Cheryl Oleis announced that the Student Alumni are selling exam survival kits for $20……..the baskets are filled with all sort of goodies to help the student survive studying for exams. They would like to make sure that every international student receives one. Staff Council agreed to purchase 5 survival kits; they money should be taken from the Foundation Account (STAFFPRO).

•  The next meeting is scheduled for January 9, 2012 at 8:30 a.m. in the Simmons Room, Alumni Building.
