Suicide Prevention Coalition Notes

Successes:

  • Straub Middle school reported having great response from Polk County Crisis team in helping with a level 2 threat assessment.
  • Polk County Behavioral Health updated the coalition on changes including the addition of a crisis case manager to their team and now having a counselor out stationed at the Polk County Jail
  • County Behavioral Health services will be expanding with a new building in Monmouth, set to open in late summer or early fall.
  • Dallas High School’s Counselor Stacie McGraw reported a successful level 1 screening, where the student surrendered her medication and connections were made to County Crisis Services
  • Due to demand, Central Health and Wellness Center has added a second counselor
  • Central High School performance of Bang, Bang You’re Dead successful with community discussions around school shootings and suicide led by Doug Gouge.
  • 15 QPR facilitators are being trained this week and will begin offering trainings in March
  • 3 ASIST facilitators will be trained in Medford, OR next week. ASIST training will be offered in the spring

  • The following chart was handed out to illustrate the goals and objectives that were written into the $50,000 Salem Health Grant as a way to help inform the work of the Sub-Committees

Goal 1: Develop an infrastructure for suicide prevention in Polk County.

Objective 1.1: Coordinate suicide prevention trainings on a quarterly basis in Polk County. / Track number of Suicide Prevention Coalition and subcommittee meetings.

Goal 5: Develop and market suicide prevention messages.

Objective 5.1: Develop suicide prevention messages (warning signs of suicide, risk and protective factors, stigma reduction, and appropriate actions to take for the persons in distress, symptoms of depression, etc.) by the end of the first six months of the grant. / Media kit is developed for contacting local media outlets.
Marketing materials are developed to promote awareness about suicide prevention. / Marketing and Outreach Sub-Committee present media kit and outreach materials to Suicide Prevention Coalition.
Suicide Prevention Coalition approves media kit and marketing materials for distribution.
Objective 5.2: Disseminate suicide prevention messaging to Polk County community organizations and members by the end of the first six months of the grant. / Regular updates are made on social media and through local media outlets.

Sub-Committes

  • Co-Chair Facilitators for each of the five committees have been established
  • Co-Chairs will be reaching out to people who said they were interested in participating in a sub-committee to schedule a meeting in the next month.
  • Doug will contact Co-Chairs for each committee to provide them with an email list for their committee and provide some direction for the first meeting.
  • If you are interested in participating in a sub-committee and have not signed up yet, please let Doug Gouge know.

  • Because most of the work will be handled in these subcommittee meetings, the whole coalition will begin meeting on a quarterly basis.

Items for follow up

  • Dallas High School needs more copies of the Resource Cards to be given to students
  • Look into possibility of engaging OHSU students in the Coalition and training efforts
  • Look into providing training to volunteers at Sable House and RAs at Western Oregon University
