Contact Lens Fees: What You Should Know

Contact lenses are medical devices that provide many benefits to patients who wear them. They can also cause serious consequences including permanent vision loss if not fit by an expert and taken care of properly. Examining a patient for contact lenses requires additional time and expertise. For this reason, there are separate, additional fees for contact lens examinations that patients who do not wear contact lenses do not pay.

Contact Lens Evaluation

In addition to your regular eye examination, there is a separate contact lens evaluation fee if you wear lenses. This fee is NOT covered under most medical/vision insurance plans. The fee will depend on the type of lenses you wear. A fee schedule is available in the office upon request. The evaluation fee includes an ocular surface examination, measurement of the size and curvature of your eyes, all diagnostic lenses, lab and shipping fees, fitting analysis and follow up visits as needed to obtain a satisfactory fit. If you have not worn contact lenses previously, your evaluation will include instruction on application and removal of the lenses, as well as proper care and cleaning techniques. The evaluation fee is NON-REFUNDABLE and is due, in full, at the time of service. This fee does not include the cost of your contact lens supply.

The contact lens fit is finalized after you and the doctor agree that the lenses are satisfactory, or if either of you determine that contact lenses are not an acceptable option for your eyes. Once finalized, any future changes in brand, type, or prescription will be considered a refit and may be subject to additional fees. These refitting fees cover additional trial lenses, examination time and follow up appointments that may be necessary to ensure a healthy contact lens fit.

As per Pennsylvania state regulations, your contact lens prescription is valid for one year. After 12 months, the prescription expires. If you wish to continue to wear lenses, you must return for a comprehensive eye examination and contact lens evaluation. The doctor will not renew or extend expired prescriptions.

Contact Lens Supply

After you have been successfully fit, you will have the option of buying a supply of lenses that will last up to one year. You will need to replace your lenses as directed by your doctor, depending on the type of lens to be worn. Purchasing a year’s supply of contact lenses at one time is beneficial as discounts and rebates may be available, and because you will have the convenience of having new lenses on hand when you need to replace them.
