Historical and Cultural Vocabulary Assignment: Oral Presentation
What are we doing?
Each student will be assigned one word/term. He/she will give a 1-2 minute speech on his/her assigned date (see below) AT THE START OF CLASS. He/she will also create a small poster on 8.5x11 paper which will be placed on the classroom wall after presentations, so that other students may look at it later if they need help remembering and understanding the new word.
In your presentation and poster, include:
-Which chapter and page your term is found in.
-The exact sentence in which the term is mentioned. (if there if more than 1 time, just choose one). Who is saying it? What is happening?
-A brief explanation of what your term means/refers to.
*If you are not ready at the start of class, you will receive a mark of 0
*If you are absent on your assigned day, you must speak with Miss Manji before to arrange an alternate date BEFOREHAND. If an emergency arises a doctor’s note or note from Mr. Halls acknowledging your special circumstance must be provided immediately upon your return to class- otherwise you will receive a 0.
Why are we doing this?
There are several historical and cultural references to the 1960’s in the novel The Secret Life of Bees. A better understanding of these references will help us in order to get a bigger picture of the historical context of the novel, and also to build our knowledge of North America’s past and our vocabulary!
How will we be graded?
· How clear your presentation and poster is.
· How informative and knowledgeable you presentation is.
· Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Any assignment with plagiarism will receive a Zero.
