RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION

Recruitment

We recruit for three main purposes:

1.  KMT staff

2.  KMT/ KM learners

3.  KM staff

All applications are processed according to role.

Sources of Recruitment

Recruitment for our learning programmes come from a variety of sources:

·  In-salon adverts – interested applicants are required to submit a CV

·  Website – the training section on our website includes details of all of the training courses offered, details of how to apply and a section for CV’s to be uploaded directly to us.

·  Referrals from Connexions/ Careers service – whilst the nature of Connexions is currently changing we are still receiving applications from the careers service

·  Recommendations from colleagues/ previous employees

·  Other adverts in local newspapers

·  Advertising events

·  Schools work experience scheme (occasionally used)

·  Other partner providers

Recruitment for KMT staff comes from the following sources:

·  University of Derby Employment Agency

·  Gumtree or other online job sites

·  Existing KM staff – many of our tutors and assessors have joined KMT through their role as KM salon staff

·  Other adverts in local newspapers

Recruitment for KM staff comes from the following sources:

·  Adverts in local newspapers

·  In-salon adverts

·  Gumtree or other online job site

·  Website – there are details online of the stylist’s positions available within the salons and a section to upload CV’s.

All sources of recruitment are given equal and valid consideration.

KMT Staff

These fall into two main sub-categories:

1.  Centre administration/ IT support

Currently, as these tend to be part-time vacancies or short term contracts, we are utilising the University of Derby Student Employment Agency, managed by Emma Smith. The process is as follows:

a)  KMT contact Emma with a vacancy and a description of the role

b)  Emma advertises the role within the University and forwards the CVs of interested and appropriate candidates to KMT.

c)  KMT select candidates for interview.

d)  KMT interviews candidates, selects candidates and provides feedback to candidates and Emma on the process.

e)  Candidate begins work at KMT with a brief induction appropriate to the role.

After a period of time, if the candidate is suitable and if the role can be accommodated, KMT will discuss with the candidate the possibility of providing a short-term contract for the employee.

2.  Learning and assessment

Learning and assessment personnel are recruited on an ad-hoc basis according to the needs of the business. Often this recruitment comes from the pool of stylists and barbers at KM as this has key advantages of familiarity with the learners and systems of the business. Thus, quality standards are more easily maintained. The disadvantage of this source is often their lack of learning and assessment qualifications and experience. Therefore we also more recently have been utilising online recruitment sites, such as Gumtree for qualified trainers and assessors.

KM staff can be either approached and/or may have expressed a prior interest in becoming a trainer/ teacher/ assessor. Arrangements are made on an individual basis and are also subject to the capacity of KMT to offer employment.

Where potential staff have applied online a CV is submitted and suitable applicants are selected for interview, shortlisted and recruited. References are sought from a previous employer.

For any member of staff working in training and assessment, evidence of a CRB check is essential and requested. Teachers and assessors may be either employed or associate members of staff but are expected to follow the systems and procedures of KMT in relation to learners.

Successful candidates may be invited to attend a taster session/s. These sessions are held either during one of the model sessions at the Market Place/ Scunthorpe salon or during the day at either the Babington Lane or Scunthorpe salon. They provide potential learners with an insight into the working salon and introduce them to some of the practical techniques they will be working towards. If the candidate is already a hairdresser they will be asked to complete a trade test on a client, generally on a model client. Verbal or written feedback is given to the candidate as appropriate.

The process of recruitment

All candidates complete a trial period of employment in the salon to assess their suitability for a career in Hairdressing with Kieran Mullin Ltd. Suitability is reviewed and feedback on the candidate is sought from various personnel including:

During the trial period candidates complete an Initial Assessment to identify both strengths and any areas for development. Candidates have the opportunity to participate in training and development activities

The For Skills on-line initial assessment is completed by candidates early on to determine their current working levels in line with the framework requirements and also any areas for development. Further diagnostic assessment is completed as required. Results are discussed with learners and support needed/ indicated is agreed. The learner is encouraged to discuss any support needs they have early on. This is recorded using an initial assessment review form.

Interviews are conducted on a one to one basis, by only one member of KMT/ KM staff. / At least 90% of applicants are doubly reviewed to ensure the outcome of the interview is not based solely on the opinion of one person.
Health and Safety of all applicants needs to be checked, particularly in relation to asthma and eczema. / In some cases asthma and eczema or other skin conditions can deteriorate through the day to day activities and use of water, products and chemicals in the salon and may impact on the candidates’ ability to carry out their chosen career.
Some training and assessment staff are recruited internally from KM as they are already working as stylists in the salons. They are not then formally interviewed for their training role. / Staff have an informal discussion/ interview with Teresa Mullin to discuss their career aspirations and suitable training qualifications available. Staff are already used to working with and supporting learners in the salons but will arrange to shadow experienced trainers and assessors for a period of time.
All training staff are required to hold a valid CRB check as well as declare any existing or ongoing prosecutions.
